Vincent Price once offered kits for these creations, and they included crepe hair as well. I'll show you how to attach it with precision, completing the transformation and making these apple shrunken heads look like they've been crafted by the masters of macabre.

Awesome! I made many of these back in the 70s and 80s. I love seeing your take. I never soaked mine because I liked the brown gnarliness. What a blast to see this again. I thought nobody knew about these any more.

Duuuuude! Randi, these are AWESOME. I absolutely LOVE shrunken heads, kinda obsessed since I learned the technique for making real ones when I was a kid. They're an Ecuadorian "craft" and having a parent from there, I was lucky enough to be told how it's done. The stitching is to trap the soul of the defeated person inside the head. The shrinking is done by boiling the de-skulled head for a while, then filling the head with hot sand. The dark color comes from rubbing ashes all over them.

Anyway, yours look fantastic and it's rad that you graced the spooky season with some great looking gruesome shrunken heads!

thanks for sharing , great work , my grandpa left a dome of apple skin on top he ran the blade under most of it to seperate it from the apple then made a hindred small long slashes to the dome and as it dried it curled up and looked like a haircut , cheers from down under

I didnt know that they did this so I thought I made it up, but Im pretty sure I am the first to do it with avocados

Very instructive! Nice carving skills, BTW, and the celebrity comparisons are great. (Keith Richards!) My grandmother used to use this technique to make little gnome people (the heads had little costumed bodies) back in the early 60s. (For all I know, the technique may have come over with her family from the Black Forest). I remember being very struck by those as a child!
