Perched atop a hill overlooking the Bordeaux skyline, "Maison L" is one of the most fascinating and audacious residential projects in contemporary architecture. Designed in the 1990s by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas (OMA) for a businessman who suddenly became paraplegic, this bespoke home was intended to be more than just a dwelling; it was conceived as an entire world capable of restoring his freedom.
Composed of three superimposed levels with contrasting atmospheres—a base carved into the rock, an ethereal glass platform, and a concrete box floating in mid-air—the house incorporates a mobile, hydraulic office at its heart. Moving up and down through the three floors according to the owner's needs, this platform constantly alters the light, structure, and landscape of the building.
