I heard this AI “ring” story a few days ago on another channel. It varied in a few details, indicating both stories sprung from the same AI story, adapted for contrasts between channels. I thought this version was a better mix of characters, but this story suffered greatly from a lack of proofreading and editing. The original story was written from a first person viewpoint (“I”) by Daniel, but this adaptation was written from a third person perspective (“he”). The problem is that a number of “I”’s remained where they should have been converted to “he”’s. Good editing would have corrected this, because it was not a subtle error. They went to the lake in Clare’s SUV, leaving his truck behind. Before they left the lake he contemplated the issues that might impact their three hour drive together back to the city. (wasn’t it a two hour drive to the lake? I may be remembering that incorrectly.) However, when they actually left to go home, they had separate vehicles, Clare in her SUV. and Lucy and Daniel in his truck. Again, sloppy proofreading and editing… There were several other errors independent of one another, suggesting a total lack of editing altogether. These errors are annoying, for they indicate the channel team did not have enough respect for the listeners’ intellect to realize they deserved the effort of a good edit because smart listeners notice incongruent passages. Beyond these errors, though, there is a more basic error. The core of the storyline — the ring that represents a future marriage — is a flawed premise; the passing down of a male ring to an In-law. Traditionally, such a gesture is a passing of an heirloom engagement ring to an incoming bride, or the family signet ring from a deceased nobleman to his heir. Unless this AI story originated in another culture than the one in which this story is set, there is no custom for a crossover of male heirlooms to incoming male grooms. The ring was sized to the grandfather’s hand, a fit Daniel’s hand as well, so it would have been far too big to remain safely on Clare’s smaller hand, yet Daniel proposed to her with it and placed it on her finger. There are more inconsistencies — too many list — that indicates a professional level of editing did not occur. If a channel wishes to make an income from views, it should be willing to respect the viewers enough to put in at least the minimum level of effort, which is careful editing of words, visuals, and soundtrack, to make the listening experience as flawless as possible.
