Who Makes the Better Lowlight Underwater Camera? I Tested Both

Sean Elliott - Underwater Video

I took the GoPro Mission 1 Pro and the Insta360 AcePro 2 into Tank Cave to test which one is best in lowlight. Which do you prefer?

I am not sponsored and all my videos are 100% honest and blunt about all action cameras and smartphones. As I say "I love them all and hate them all" I just want to help you make your decision on which is best for you.

I have a large range of videos on GoPro, Insta360, DJi, Android & IOS and reviews on dive related products. Please check them out.

Another great video Sean. I actually preferred A and was pleasantly surprised to see it was the Ace Pro 2. Been using it UW for a solid month now and have to say I'm blown away by it. I've found setting the sharpness to Low, deals with that 'action cam' look. ISO 800 max sweet spot for most stuff unless below 20m. Totally agree they need a software update to be able to switch off UW mode while it's in the housing. That's the biggest downside for me so far. The clarity zoom is incredible and gives so many more possibilities. Colour wise it does tend to push in way too much red and cyan but that's easily fixed in post. And lastly, you cave diving videos are great and help me remember I never want to take up cave diving lol.

Appreciated for your video, I can now make up my mind now. Definitely go for A

Awesome cave dive.. Glad to see a path line... Seen enough of lost cave divers... Nice video, great comparison.

this is a spot on evaluation. I have the mission and was surprised how well the footage holds up adjustments in post , even on the bult in colour profiles. But like you say it's really aimed for people who want to get into settings and grading. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends for just a casual point and shoot.

Low-light environments used to be a total nightmare for GoPro, so I'm genuinely surprised to see these results.

So curious for Ace Pro 3. I'm about to upgrade from 1 and can wait just a few more months. There's so much specs to focus on, hopefully diving mode will keep their attention. The 3 might as well be an Ace Pro 2 with just small upgrades and optional tele lens, competiting for the ultimate (small) travel camera.

@ygr2110 2 months ago

Thank you for the comparison. I already have an Ace Pro 2 with only few dives, so I will not change it but I definitively prefer the B shots.

Let’s see the answer from the competition.

After diving in the PI with my gph8 I saw it just wasn’t up to task anymore, so I got the ace pro 2. I knew it would be stellar underwater compared to the 8, but I was surprised that it didn’t have the ability to change custom settings on the fly, so I returned it. I’m no power user, and as much as I despise the quick app, I just had to go back to GoPro. Maybe I’m just used to its setup method. I have yet to dive with my m1p, but I know it will be better than the 8, and I really like the ability to have custom presets set up for a day in and out of the water, and won’t have to remove it from the housing unless I need a fresh battery.
I really like your objective presentations. I’m going to get the divevolk for days I just don’t want to deal with the GoPro.

Good afternoon, do You have any new info (or feedback from Gopro) related to long distance focusing problems using wet lenses on Mission 1 pro? My private opinion is that "too soft" image is clearly visible on these videos (conparing to insta) even You didn't use wet lens... thank You!

@patrickbernard8605 1 month ago

I have both but I am going to drop the Ace Pro 2, I prefer the M1 image. I still have to bring the M1 underwater (one more week) but I am more than happy with the above surface images.
Indeed, compared with the Ace Pro 2, the M1 requires more pre and post actions but for me that is part of the hobby and a way to learn and improve. And as in photography, I like to give the images my own touch.

What would your thoughts be on the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS for underwater video? Reckon they'd even attempt to make an underwater housing for it?

@GuyDeutsch-zt8ym 2 months ago (edited)

Well Sean, a stranger who popped into your channel might think you're waging a crusade against Mission 1 😂 But in all seriousness, I think the Mission 1 displays here more natural colors than Ace Pro 2.
