This video tells the story of the Silk Road — not a road, but a landscape of exchange that connected China to Rome and every civilization in between for roughly fifteen centuries, carrying not just silk but everything that human beings have ever found worth moving across impossible distances.

Beginning with Zhang Qian's extraordinary diplomatic journey into Central Asia under Emperor Wu and the Han Dynasty's opening of the Western Regions, the story follows the network westward through the oasis cities of the Tarim Basin, the Sogdian merchant diaspora that was the road's primary human infrastructure, the great empires of Parthia and Rome and the Sassanids and Byzantium, and the transformative moment when the Islamic conquests reorganized the entire central section of the network. It examines what actually moved along the road — silk and pepper and lapis lazuli and glass and paper and plague — and what traveled invisibly alongside the goods: Buddhism and Manichaeism and Nestorian Christianity, mathematics and astronomy and papermaking, artistic traditions from Gandhara to Tang Chang'an that were something entirely new because they were made from the meeting of several old things.

The story also gives extended attention to the Mongol Pax that briefly unified the entire Eurasian landmass, the Black Death that traveled the same routes as the silk, the Dunhuang Library Cave and its forty thousand preserved manuscripts, and the maritime routes that gradually superseded the overland ones without ever quite replacing what the overland world had been.

This gentle bedtime history explores the Silk Road as a story of exchange, synthesis, catastrophe, and the permanent human need to carry value — and ideas — across the distance between where things are made and where they are needed.
