The Steam Frame does not have to “save VR” to matter. In this video, I break down seven ways Valve’s new standalone headset has already changed the VR industry, from giving Meta real competition again, to breathing new life into older VR games, opening the door for new hardware and accessories, giving users deeper control over the headset, and even changing the conversation around what premium VR hardware can cost.

We also get into SUPERHOT VR’s new Steam Frame update, Half-Life: Alyx running standalone, FluxPose building native Frame support, Valve’s unusually open SteamOS developer access, and why the Frame could have an impact on VR even if it never becomes the market leader.

Valve being what it is today is becoming more and more of a miracle compared to every other company being so anti-consumer.

Just making me realize "you can ssh into the linux machine strapped to your face" made me happy today

@invidious07 11 days ago

"Frame is too expensive, VR is dead."

Frame immediately sells out, and everyone cant wait to get it.

@TheFrantic5 11 days ago

I see it more as "Your privacy costs around $450."

@SirSithly 11 days ago

Also worth mentioning, In VRChat you can run the full game and see everyones avatars on standable now. As the game doesn't run on andoird instead steamos using proton.
So this is the first standalone headset that you can do that for in VRChat.

what matters most to me? 1) I own my hardware. 2) open hardware (I can do what I want with it). 3) privacy (mass surveillance sucks for the people)

The steam frame is also pushing arm64 support for games, factorio can now run without fex/box64

I hope that, if anything, games and software finally starts taking serious design decisions around eye tracking

@johnreiland9180 11 days ago

The great knocck-on effect of eye tracking shifting from a premium option to a standard one is the way it incentivizes game developers and publishers to invest in implementing foveated rendering, hopefully pushing that from a "why should we add that" technology to a "why haven't you added that" technology.

When eye tracking isn't a given, foveated rendering is an enormous development cost with questionable returns. When eye tracking is a given, foveated rendering is such a good investment that NOT doing it will be seen as a foolishly missed opportunity for massive performance gains.

Foveated rendering takes "my computer is good but it's not 'VR good'", and removes the distinction.

All you gotta do is look at the VR modding community, and how many VR MODS there are transforming Flat games to VR, and you'll see VR is doing better than ever, IMO anyways...

People on social media tend to be very all or nothing, black and white kinds of thinkers. Thank you for your educated and nuanced take, it's refreshing.

I think it was $800 before Rampocolypse

So I basically didn't even consider buying a VR headset until frame. It adresses everything that I didn't like in other ones on the market. Glad I was able to buy one and wasn't put in the queue like it happebed with both steam machine and controller

@TechRyze 11 days ago

100,000 enthusiasts buying this headset is very significant for VR developers.

Especially as it brings access to ARM & x86, Android, Windows & Linux based titles.

Interesting times.

cant beleve its only been a minute but you know what youtube keep suggesting this to me

@SirSithly 11 days ago

I really hope these devs implement for of Foveated rendering, I WISH VRChat would but they already said they wont. :(

@mikesgamelab6369 11 days ago

10:20 This single fact is doing a lot of heavy lifting for me. Once I graduated to PCVR with my Quest 2, Quest Link gradually became a pain point, especially when I got hooked on VRChat. It just became a slow and manual process to play, and sometimes it would just not work that night, so no VR for me. And having just learned to pull myself away from instagram, I would rather not be in Meta’s ecosystem until they can win back my trust. Kinda interesting that I can actually quantify how much that improvement is worth to me now: “$600”.

"...Ultimately tearing it down to see what's inside"
Your sacrifice will be heralded as well mourned

@weab 11 days ago

As someone who's always stuck to PC VR, I've had exactly zero interest in standalone headsets due to their limited software and restrictive nature. I want either a basic screen strapped to my face or a full computing experience, no in-between. An appliance-like "smart" experience is the last thing I'd ever want. The Steam Frame is looking like the device I've always wanted, and the first real VR computing device in my opinion. I'm very eager to get one.

"When we did the one-time randomization of the list, your place in line ended up beyond the number of Steam Frames currently available for reservation."
