The real test of proficiency was in the explanations. Singaporeans explained concepts or thoughts in English while Hong Kongers explained in Cantonese .

Correction at 1:50

Malaysia = a country, next to Singapore
Malay = a race, usually the native language is Bahasa Melayu

I studied in Hong Kong for 7 years and moved back to Singapore when I was 10 years old. 😂 This is really funny for me to watch. Bruh I retained one year just to catch up on English!! I couldn’t speak a complete sentence on my first day of school in Singapore.

I still remember the times that those e-dictionaries in HK tried to sell their products by introducing all the uncommon idioms… seriously, we don’t speak those on daily basis.

As a Hong Konger who studied in Singapore for 6 years of Primary education and 5 years of Secondary education in Hong Kong, I can confirm there’s a huge difference in terms of competence 🫠🙈

But there’s no point comparing the two because the environment themselves are different.

As a Singaporean, I find that HK students lacked exposure to the English language and therefore it’s not surprising that Singaporean Students does better in the English test. However, the students still did quite well despite the handicap of English not being widely spoken in their daily life and their standard is commendable!

Gauging English proficiency shouldn't be done merely just by asking the meanings of a few difficult words. It's about how you communicate with others, it's about how you are able to express yourself clearly. More importanly, it's about how you make a more compelling argument with your peers, especially at work place. You may be able to memorise a few difficult words fairly easily, but communicating fluently requires a bit of effort and time.

I'm Singaporean. I believe languages are closely tied with our daily lives. In Singapore, because of our unique multiracial society, English is our common language. Even the elderly will understand some English words though some may be uneducated or have had very little education or are mainly Chinese/Malay/Tamil educated.
Before the present education system was introduced- mastering English as the First Language (and also as the medium of instruction from kindergartens to universities, except during mother tongue classes)
and mastering one's ethnic mother tongue as the Second Language, the various ethnic groups mostly used their own ethnic mother tongues in schools with English as a first or second language.
And once English is decided as the medium for instruction for schools and all official matters, it's not a matter of choice but necessity that we've to master English. If you want to do well in your studies, the first thing you've to do is to master English. That's why parents start speaking English to their children since young.
It's a NEED, not a want.

Feel free to ask me any questions!
