Three guys in this Rangers starting lineup, Sierra, Incaviglia, and Fletcher, would play for the Tigers later on in their careers (Sierra in 1996, Incaviglia in 1991 and briefly in 1998, and Fletcher in 1995), and another, Buddy Bell, would go on to manage the Tigers (1996-98).
Two Tigers on this team would go on to be highly successful GMs in their time—Ken Williams (White Sox last World Series winning team) and Billy Beane (Moneyball/Oakland A’s, still with the team as of 2021 as partial owner and Executive Vice President).
Sparky would soon be wishing there was something stronger than tobacco in that pipe, I'll wager. Thank God we had the Pistons, and then Barry Sanders, to distract us from this season's stunning collapse. Just everything went wrong.
I was ten years old and quite literally assumed at the time that the Tigers would always be good, because they had been ever since I'd started following them. This '89 season was a rude awakening to say the least.
This was a great game for Hough and the Rangers. I remember it well. They started the ‘89 season 17-5, but alas finished at 83-79 and not close to first place. Thank you for posting it.
