How can brown glazes, gold leaf, and layered colors help create mood in an abstract painting?

In this intuitive abstract painting process, I’m experimenting with brown glaze, transparent layers, gold leaf, and darker colors to bring more harmony, depth, and atmosphere to the painting.

I used to feel unsure about brown, but living in the desert changed the way I see this color. Now, I love how brown can create a grounding effect and balance stronger colors in my artwork.

In this painting session, I’m working with subtle brown glazing to soften and harmonize different areas of the canvas. I’m also adding layers over the gold leaf to help protect it while keeping its texture and reflective quality.

I don’t always know exactly what a painting needs next. Sometimes, I have to step back, let the layers dry, and look at the painting with fresh eyes. That process helps me discover what will create the mood or feeling I’m looking for.

For me, abstract painting is about exploring color, texture, layers, and emotion. It’s about creating artwork that feels personal and expresses something uniquely my own.
