Everyone remembers Silence of the Lambs for what happened on the screen. A serial killer skinning women. A cannibal in a cage trading secrets from behind bulletproof glass. A young woman walking into a basement in the dark with her hands shaking. But strip out the horror, and the murder, and the cannibalism, and there is a much older question underneath. A question a Roman emperor was asking himself 1,900 years ago, in a private journal he never meant anyone to read. What is a thing, in itself? What is its nature? What does it cost to become something else? So this one isn't a review. It's a case — that Silence of the Lambs is one of the greatest films ever made about human nature, and it is hiding under all that gore an argument about how transformation actually works. That you can either earn it, in which case you walk through fire and the lambs get quiet for a while. Or you can steal it, in which case you die in a filthy basement. As far as Clarice goes her payment for her transformation was literally the silencing of the lambs. She traded that experience and those emotions to realise her potential. And I don't think it was intentional.
And Lecter being the devil is pretty spot on. He is what he is. A known quantity. You know what he is the moment you see him. He dosnt lie and makes deals with you in order to give you what you seek.
In essence Clarice paid Lecter with her life story for her transformation. She made a deal with the devil to catch a killer regardless of the cost to herself.
Clarice payed a hole lot, her sanity, her past herself. She meet a mind that was toying with her from the start, and while the lamb was quiet in the end so was her innocence. While yes, her childhood forged her so did Hannibal and his mind games. So did her first case and the first time she had to take a life a life for another. She did not became a soldier it a hunter. For whom, well depends if she succumbed to the mind games of Hannibal.
As for Hannibal I don't think he is the devil, he is a person who knows that the truth is worse than a lie, the cost also. There are people that go their whole life's trying to be happy, safe, whole on a lie and the cost of it it's great. A lie while it can be crude, awful and bittersweet it's also freeing in a way. It's constant also. For someone who is so brilliant, there is also many "crazy Vs genius" things and what people do to try to live with those demons. It's in all of human history: depression, drugs, poverty, etc. As a way of coping not lying to yourself and being free to be who you are even ifto other you are the devil of their story. Well, it's the least of several evils. But who I am to tell really 😅
