Wild Camping in Bannau Brycheiniog | Bal Mawr & The Cambrian Way
Join me and Mr Linley from ‪@Linleys‬ for an adventure into the mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) in South Wales.
Our target was Bal Mawr, reached by scrambling our way up onto the ridge and following the Cambrian Way. The ridge walk itself was absolutely fantastic, with some incredible views across the Welsh mountains and valleys.
This trip was also the first time I’d taken my Rab Ridge Raider bivvy out into the wild. The plan was to spend the night high on the mountain, right next to the trig point at Bal Mawr — and that's exactly what we did.
Things got a little interesting while we were setting up camp, though, when a couple of farmers arrived on quad bikes and questioned us about what we were doing up there. It was a slightly nervy moment, but thankfully everything was fine in the end.
With the bivvy set up, we settled in for a brilliant night under the stars, surrounded by the mountains and with the ridge stretching away into the distance.
A fantastic walk, a new bivvy to test, a few unexpected encounters and a night on the mountaintop — what more could you ask for?
