I love long guard and high guard, helps manage range and adjust, flows super well

Generally speaking, being able to implement a few different guards to suit the situation is a good skill 🥊

LOVE the Philly shell it allows you to show off your footwork and head movement and your vision is never lost but wouldn’t recommend being your only guard power punchers/combo punchers will give you hell if you don’t have stopping power

Azumah Nelson mixed his high guard, cross guard and low guard very well in different situations which makes him a complete fighter

One property of the Philly shell is that you are reliant on your lead shoulder to defend. This is effective against shorter or even same size opponents because they effectively have to reach past your shoulder to make contact with your head. However, if your opponent has a significant height advantage, they are punching down at you, so it is much more difficult to use your shoulder to block. I frequently use the Philly shell, but never against opponents that have a significant height advantage.

So from what I can inffer as a fighting game player who just started boxing, are these the pros/cons of each guard:
*Cross Guard*
+ Extremely safe against left/right (straight shot) mixups
- Extremely vulernable to bodyshots and uppercuts
- Makes all your punches slower
*High Guard*
+ Good against most attacks
+ Neutral punching power for both hands
- Needs different arm position to block each different type of attack, which can get mentally taxing
- Physically makes you a bigger target
- Blocks your vision
*L-Guard*
+ Extremely safe against body shots & uppercuts
+ Mostly relies on body movement instead of arm movement to block/parry other attacks
+ Makes your smaller
+ Hides your jabs
- Makes your cross weaker
- Your only defense against left/right head shot mixups is gambling on shoulder roll
*Low Guard*
+ Hides all of your punches
+ Exclusive access to whipping punches
+ Highest punching power
- Your only defense against anything is guessing correctly on body & head movement
*Long Guard*
+ Keeping your opponent away naturally gives you more time to react
+ Your lead hand naturally pushes away the opponent's attacks from your lead hand's side
+ Your lead hand pushing the opponent away helps setup rear hand shots
+ Your lead hand can block the opponent's face
+ Fastest lead hand attacks
- Holding up your lead hand can get tiring
- vulernable to body shots
- If your opponent ever gets in on you you're screwed

My favorite guard is def the crossguard. I dont utilize it as my main guard though, I use it to add variety to my guard and its great for counter punching

Philly shell for outfighting, shifting into a squared high guard for infighting, my personal favorite combination. With smothers it becomes quickly overwhelming

Where the Cross Guard Lovers at?

You should've showed heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon! He was a master of both x-guard and the Philly shell(L-guard). He'd use the x-guard to block straight punches to the head and he'd easily switch to the Philly shell(L-guard) to block hooks and body punches.

My choice is high guard and cross guard ... switch between those two

I use the long guard when I’m out of or barely in range, I use the Philly shell when I’m tired or moving a lot, and I use the high guard when I want to rip hard punches
