I'm experiencing a so called "art block" for the first time after getting injured, and depression naturally followed. it's so much harder to just start a painting. so i think you're dead on about the cause of it
Yeah the editing is great. So much better than a time lapse. Watching you put each brush stroke down is so much better. Your voice overs are great I could listen to you all day. Great work as usual.
I’m heading in the same direction of straying from my references and trying to make my paintings look more like paintings. Very helpful to see each of your brush strokes like this, I’d even accept some of the waiting time between brush strokes. If there’s an area it took you a while to make a decision on, I want to see it and know why
The "maybe you don't actually like painting" is so real. I have been drawing my whole life, but I never stick with it long enough to develop a real practice. I started going to art classes at my local uni and am in Drawing I now and after spending 50+ hours drawing a skeleton from life, I had an epiphany that I don't actually like drawing. It's tedious!!! But, I watched this because I am a realist and I want to play more and be more expressive and have fun, so maybe that will help me to enjoy it again.
Also, I really liked the way you handled the timelapse element of this video.
I love that you wanted to reintroduce fear back into your paintings. The fear of not being sure of how its going to turn out. Thats one of the coolest things about creating artwork. I love your channel.
Nice! I am full of fear and stress but also have blessings overflowing. Responsibilities. I did some of my best work lately when I was supposed to be packing for a road trip… it was exactly what I needed
Turned out really nice. It's a big growth to leave realism and reference behind. It also doesn't mean you have to paint sloppy paintings. But I realised that just being a human printer was not how you make interesting art.
the video title hit me square in the face. Ive been drawing realistic subjects and painting for years- and find i like very few results. I'm starting a new chapter as well, with materials and style. Im a truck driver with very little time to work on art, so I stall and hesitate quite a bit, but I hope changing how I work will inspire more output in the future. Thank you.
Realism isn't boring. It's simply a more refined art form. As a child I thought a home cooked meal was boring compared to McDonalds. However, as an adult, with a more sophisticated palate, I now realize McDonalds taste like crap. To each their own.
also the words "Individual Reference Photo" really resonated with me today. I recently felt that 'art block' feeling and couldn't figure out why, but I think those words have given me my answer! I sometimes just admit defeat in the studio and chalk it up to something like 'art block' but really what it is is the need to take a step back, look at other people's art, talk about art, research and write about art, and you might find your answer.
I've found myself going through all of your videos and putting them on the background while Im working on my own projects. Its oddly comforting and I want to thank you for keeping me company. I love your works and approach to art!
Ok I’m going to challenge your “bakers block” analogy. It is my opinion we should live in a world where wage dependent workers should be allowed to have bakers block. As a former chef I definitely had days I wasn’t feeling it and should have stayed home for my mental health. As a painter I have the same and let myself have a day off. Personally I think that artist block is often just a form of burnout and should be treated as such. Take a beat to address the underlying issues (sleep? Food? Pain? Stress distractions? Need to see grass?) then try again.
Great video. That editing must have taken forever but is nice to watch. I’m experimenting with a related concept of bringing more materiality into my work.
I love this! A painting should look like a painting. Realism looks like a photo. If I desire this, I would take a photo. Nice painting, I agree with you. The painting is a painting!!! Yay!!!
love the brush stroke section! great editing. if you’re spending too much time cutting, try to get really good at keyboard shortcuts. it’ll save you so much time
As someone who stretches my own canvases, the manner in which you did yours drove me nuts. For me, getting the canvas drum tight is a must. Then the half assed shelf being reinforced in a half assed way also bothered me. And your work space looked cluttered and cramped. Then I saw you paint. And you are very good! Thanks for your video.
This video made me feel so much better to the point that i got up and finished an old painting, love what you are doing! and that painting looks very cool!
