bananas are mildly acidic, with a pH level around 5 to 5.2, making them a low-acid fruit. This pH level is far less acidic than citrus fruits and means bananas are unlikely to trigger acid reflux or heartburn and can even help neutralize stomach acid due to their alkaline properties.
Why bananas are considered low-acid:
pH level: Fruits with a pH of 4.6 or lower are considered highly acidic, but bananas fall into the mildly acidic range.
Alkaline properties: Bananas have alkaline properties and can act as a natural antacid, helping to coat the stomach lining and providing relief from irritation.
Pectin content: They are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that aids digestion by helping food move through the digestive tract, which can prevent acid from backing up into the esophagus.
Considerations:
Ripeness: Unripe bananas contain more resistant starch, which can be difficult to digest and may cause acidity in some people.
Individual sensitivity: While beneficial for many, some individuals may still experience acidity after eating bananas, especially if consumed on an empty stomach or in large quantities.
