Today's video from Aikido Samsungdang introduces the '3-Count Drill'. This drill was learned from Rupert Atkinson Sensei (Martyn-James R Atkinson, currently residing in New Zealand) during the my early stages of keiko, with the name arbitrarily chosen by myself.

The primary purpose of this drill is to learn the process leading up to executing a technique, specifically the timing of contact with a partner and disrupting their center. Practitioners learn through the drill to feel tension by pushing against each other, create proper body structure, and naturally learn to transfer power through center movement. This approach is similar to the striking practice (uchi-komi) in judo, where basic techniques are repeatedly practiced to develop correct habits.

Although named '3-Count', the actual timing of disrupting the partner's center occurs at 2.5 counts, specifically when pronouncing the 'san' (three) with the 's' sound emerging. As proficiency increases, this is further condensed to a 0.5-count movement, disrupting the partner at the moment the 'ichi' (one) sound is about to be pronounced.

The drill emphasizes repeating a single technique as many times as possible. It is merely a practice method and differs from kata that include pre-contact setup and post-technique finalization. Therefore, our dojo practices the drill first, then practices the corresponding kata.

The video introduces several drills from shomenuchi (front strike), demonstrating basic drill practice and the transition from shomenuchi iriminage drill to kata.
