Myringoplasty (sometimes called tympanoplasty) is the surgical technique performed to close an ear perforation, also called a tympanic or eardrum perforation.
Ear perforation is usually the result of acute otitis media, a blow or trauma, or water entering the ear. Although these perforations often heal on their own after treatment of the otitis media that caused them, some patients do not, requiring surgery.
In cases where this ear or eardrum perforation occurs, patients may experience hearing loss, tinnitus, otorrhea, and ear discharge, which can lead to progressive hearing loss.
In this video, I explain what this surgery, called myringoplasty, is like, and what its risks and indications are.
