There's plotting and planning for what's coming next, hedges to tackle, a generator lesson and the usual mountain of tidying that somehow never gets any smaller.

But back at our 200-year-old cottage, things get a little more nerve-racking.

After the recent wall collapse, we're perhaps more aware than ever of just how unpredictable these old stone walls can be. As we continue racking out and pointing, one section has us questioning just how far we really want to go.

Sometimes you have to know when to keep going and when to stop!

Another busy week on our 15 acres in County Mayo, making plans, learning as we go and trying to make the most of every minute we have here together.

I agree with Trev, rake smaller patches and re- point as you go to stabilize the wall. Also starting at the bottom to stabilize the base and work up. If you start at the top, the finished section will be on a weaker foundation.

Great job getting the walls capped and continuing with the pointing. It can be a little overwhelming, but slow progress is still forward progress. 😊

Are you going to try and get a roof on sometime soon? Then you could work inside when it’s raining. Doing a good job pointing and keeping it tidy.

When wall is in poor condition ie mortar perished and loose it’s best to keep to small sections at a time. Look at the flow of the stones..is weight from above securing those below or will they move if pushed. It’s like jenga but in stone 😊 I use the small double ended trowel as I find it better for random sized and shaped joints ( I also prefer to use a gardening trowel as I kept forgetting what my left hand was doing and dropping mortar off my little hawk😀 =I find that it’s curved shape helps especially when it comes to shaping mortar to squeeze into narrow joints. Bottom up is also better for walls which are a bit ‘ropey’ Otherwise it’s top down to avoid wetting fresh repointing.
DPM is cheaper than tarps for lining out wall top against rain.

In a prior episode. A commentor sugested keeping 1 chimney. I personally think it would be a luxury to have a bedroom fireplace in winter & a summer bedroom along with a lounge fire. Nice work you two!
