In 1587 the Parliament of Scotland wrote out a list of surnames. Not to record them. To be rid of the people who carried them. Sixteen years later a Scottish king took the English throne, the border was abolished overnight, and that list became the basis for hangings, confiscations and one mass deportation by sea. Twenty two Border Reiver surnames, counting down, each with the record it rests on, and the road they took through Ulster into Appalachia.
