Did Islam Begin in Petra? Historian Challenges Everything | Peter Von Sivers PhD

What if the traditional story of Islam's origins is incomplete?

In this fascinating conversation, historian Peter von Sivers explores the world that gave birth to Islam—an era dominated by the Byzantine and Persian Empires, fierce Christian theological battles, and competing visions of who Jesus really was.

Could early Islam have emerged from debates between Jacobite and Nestorian Christians? Was Petra more important than Mecca in the earliest stages of Islamic history? Why do some scholars argue that the Quran reflects controversies that were already dividing Christian communities across the Middle East?

We examine the Byzantine Empire, the Persian Empire, the Ghassanids, the Lakhmids, the origins of the Quran, the role of Jerusalem, and the controversial theories surrounding Muhammad, Mecca, Medina, and Petra.

Whether you agree or disagree, this discussion dives into some of the most debated questions in modern Islamic studies.

Topics Covered:

Origins of Islam
Petra Theory
Early Quranic History
Byzantine Empire
Persian Empire
Ghassanids and Lakhmids
Christian Influence on Islam
Historical Muhammad
Mecca vs Petra Debate
Jerusalem in Early Islam
Revisionist Islamic Scholarship
Peter von Sivers Research

Based on arguments discussed throughout the interview concerning Christian theological disputes, Petra, Mecca, Jerusalem, and the development of early Islam.

Dan Gibson must be credited with originally positing the Petra Hypothesis through his academic publications, such as Qur'anic Geography (2011), which was subsequently made popular through his documentary “The Sacred City” (2016).

I watched an interesting video a number of years back similar to this discussion. From memory a couple of key points were the mihrab in the oldest built mosques points towards Petra, following the schism in Islam, initially for about 20 or so years it pointed half way between Petra and Mecca in the mosques built. Afterward that brief period, the mihrab in all following mosques pointed to Mecca. Petra also matches the description given by the Prophet Mohamod accurately including damage, Mecca does not.

Here the full quote of Ishoyahb III, Von Sivers is paraphrasing (16:19), for those wondering if he really understands Syriac christianity : 'The heretics are deceiving you [when they say] there happens what happens by order of the Arabs, which is certainly not the case. For the tayyaye mhaggre (Muslim Arabs) do not aid those who say that God, Lord of all, suffered and died. And if by chance they do help them for whatever reason, you can inform the mhaggre (Muslims) and persuade them of this matter as it should be, if you care about it at all.'

John of Damascus wrote Against Heresies.

A later interpolation from the 12th Century suggest Muslims still believed Mecca to be near Edessa.

Why no mention of the Arians? (I think around 39 minutes in you're hinting at the Arians.)

The evidence for the Petra theory is most thoroughly presented in "Adapa's Legacy" by a scholar named Yasmin Alya. It's fascinating to explore the real history, which has been obfuscated for so long. Great job, Derek! Love the interview.
