Trollope is the author for readers who are interested in real people; their lives and psychologies. He is also the author for readers who are interested in societies of all types, at all levels, and how they work. Brilliant video!

All ten of these are true for me. Trollope is such a human writer and he feels like a friend who is writing for my enjoyment. I am looking forward to Trollope Thursdays.

Thursdays will now become the highlight of my week! Great points all. I'd add that Trollope's characters have realistic and clear dialogue; not stiff or pretentious or difficult to understand. You feel like you could carry on a conversation with any of the characters (and indeed Trollope himself!) today.

Thank you so much for this. I just spent the last winter 2026 rereading trollope. He is the ultimate comforting, discomforting novelist. His women are amazing. From Madame Max to Glencora Palliser to Mrs Proudie, Lily Dale, and beyond. How did a Victorian dude do that ?!

Trollope understood, as very few other writers did, or do, money - and the effect on human morality and behaviour of its lack, and of its excess. He doesn't preach from a great height - he understood human weakness, and as someone has truly said, he didn't treat his woman characters as caricatures or plot devices. You've referred to his accessible writing - in that respect, he seems to me to be similar to Robert Louis Stevenson: maybe an odd comparison, but both had the ability to tell a good story, in clear, even modern, language. Dickens can be - and I still love him - a bit of a slog through complex clauses, odd sentence construction, and sudden bursts of emotional eccentricity. I wouldn't be without either of them - and they gave us a hell of a lot of work to sink ourselves in and enjoy.

Thank you Katie, I enjoyed that and I feel the same about his writing. I am in my mid eighties now and when I was young the majority of Trollope's novels were not in print. So I gradually acquired all 47 of them, one by one, from second hand bookshops, thus I read them in no particular order, and every find was an exciting occasion.

Unlike Dickens, Trollope's women are real people not caricatures. There are scenes of dialogue between women where you feel as if you were a fly on the proverbial wall.

Got to agree with all of these Katie! I love that Anthony Trollope is also a huge proponent of the love match, that love alone should be the only reason you marry! Possibly because his own marriage was such a happy one 🤔

I absolutely love Anthony Trollope. Thank you for making this video. He brought me to your channel.

I just love how joyful you are when you speak about Anthony Trollope! It is heartwarming. I have only read The Warden and Cousin Henry, so I am a complete AT amateur. Your enthusiasm is so infectious, I am itching to take another down from the shelves.

I love how Trollope puts himself in the book and sometimes assures us that things are going to turn out OK. I also agree with you that he writes great love stories. I’m so excited about Trollope Thursdays! 💛

My favorite Trollope characters are the cranky old men/women who finally bend. The Lady Luftons and the Aunt Stanburys get to me every time. But his way of probing into the motives of all his characters is what makes him truly top tier.

Reading all of Trollope is quite an achievement! I appreciate the timing of this video and your series as I am nearing the time of my life when I can read all 47 of Trollope's works. (I regret how much time and energy I lost to a very very very long, very very very demanding professional career--I was lucky if I could listen to modern thrillers on audio.) What a joy it has been to have the time and brain capacity to read long Victorian novels again, as I did many years ago when I was a student. So, all by long winded way of saying I look forward to Trollope Thursdays.

Elizabeth Gaskell, herself a best-selling author (Cranford, North & South, etc.) said "I wish he(Trollope) will go on writing 'Framley Parsonage' forever." That's because his characters are real people, their dialog sounds like actual conversation! If we only had Jane Austin and Trollope's novels from the 19th century, that would tell later readers all they needed to know. 'The Way We Live Now' could be set in the 1980s, or now, with minimal changes. His non-fiction is also good, don't miss his travel books and Autobiography.

I have only a couple of Trollope's books left to read, but I have a list to reread. Trollope is one of my most favourite Victorian writers. His mother is worth a read too.
I have read Victorian literature since I was a teen, and am now in my late 70s and was shocked by what you said about Dickens and Eliot, but on reflection I realised Dickens style was difficult when I was gifted a set when I was 11 or 12. I suppose I've read more Victorians than modern authors and familiarity has led to easier reading. Trollope's humanity makes even his darker books easy reads. "Reliable and comforting" is a good way of putting it. I really enjoyed the video.

I can’t think of a better way to introduce new readers to the pleasures of Anthony Trollope than this wonderful video. And it was just as enjoyable for all Trollope devotees as well!

And so it begins....very exciting!!

I loved what you said about the "comfort and joy" that reading Trollope brings. When we were listening to Dr Wortle's School I said to Rach, "The way he writes is just so reassuring." I'm so glad you're enjoying Lolly Willowes!
