My Dad was a medic with these men. He took a bullet to his chest. He was told later a tank pulled over him and pulled him through the bottom hatch, to save his life. God Bless all these brave men!
On 7/3/21 Captain Ryan, USMC presented me with my dad’s Purple Heart. He was wounded 9/15/44 on Peleliu. Started the process in April 2016 so it took a five year “battle” to actual receive the award. My hope is the families of the thousands and Marines who were KIA or wounded at Peleliu would do the same for their loved ones.
My dad was shot in the back and evacuated for medical care. All he wanted to do was get back to his man. He also got another Purple Heart from receiving a concussion when an enemy ordinance went off next to him. These men came back with serious PTSD, and no way to help them handle it they just didn’t talk about it and bottled it up inside later in life he was diagnosed with glioblastoma and went back, fighting the war in his mind. He was very agitated, screaming, and yelling out at the “Japs”. He was a proud Marine for the rest of his life after the war and he was proud that he had served his country. He was a wonderful man, and we all loved him very much.
I had the honor today to meet a member of the 1st Marine Division who fought at this battle. I was at a Dr"s office in NYC. This gentleman was 99 years old and told me stories of what he witnessed there. Hand to hand combat,, napalm,,death. I could have listened to him for hours. He made me proud to be an American.
I remember my friends father who was in this battle (and many others) inWW2 Pacific theater He thought this was the toughest one he was in He said they took no prisoners because the Japanese would pretend to surrender but they would throw a concealed hand grenade once they were close enough to you
Love the history of ww2. My papa may he rip was Was in the Army before World War 2 started and he made it through to the end. He passed away in 2000. Miss you papa
My grandmother's first cousin was a machine gunner who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross after using his machine gun trying to protect his fellow marines. Sept 23, 1944. Hard to imagine how hard this would have been. PFC Joseph Emmett Nugent RIP
I believe Peleliu had the highest casualty rate (though not the highest number of casualties) of any of the major battles in the Pacific Theater. The particular implementation of defense in depth (with no wasteful banzai charges) was used here for the first time and repeated in both the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns--all with devastating effect.
