19 years teaching middle school. If you have presence as well it helps. I can walk into classes whose students I don’t have and within minutes the students calm down. I wish our substitute teachers had better training.  Yelling and removing students is not the answer.  Don’t let them dictate your reaction or ruin your day. Good luck to new teachers, be patient and don’t give up on yourself.

I can testify to this. It’s is how I run my classroom and it works.

Do differently: a far greater emphasis on routines

Why?
1. Routines fill students with purpose.
The second they walk in they need a purpose, a goal, or something they want to achieve.
2.routines transfer excellence in everything they do.  When students are used to doing routines well, it transfers over to academic work
3. Independence.  Every student knows what they have to do.  Confidence they can complete routine gives them confidence to complete work.

How do we establish routines
1. Highly specific and extremely detailed.  Add on to routines, increase complexity, keeps from being bored.
2. Make routines lengthy.  Opening routine can have as much as 15 events....makes kids more purpose-driven.
3. Quickly. With practice, kids should be moving quickly through the routine to develop focus
4. Done unassisted, no hints, no talking.  Only observation.  No reminding.  You teach it well, then kids do it independently.

If you focus on this, it will save time.  Also, if you can't use consequences at all, routine can replace that.

Yes, I can't wait to see your video: what if few students misbehave at the same time.

Spot on! Structure goes a long way. 25 years teaching high school... You laid it out great!

I have been using your classroom management tips for years in my middle school classroom. I have very few problems because I take the time to create and teach  routines.

I have found that being interesting helps.

It would nice if you had examples of routines.

I taught preschool / preK for 9 years.  Tutored 1-12 for 8 years, and community college students for 5 years. Subs need comprehensive training, not express training. Please encourage each other in words, and deeds. Guard against burnout.

I see so much value in this. Thank you for these solid methodologies. Much appreciated!

My routine includes marking their lunch, grabbing their first workbook needed, turning in homework, putting their planner and folder in their seat sack and then opening their Bible to the page they need for the lesson (it’s a Christian school and the routine is on a morning slide) and then usually one more thing like reading world news magazine. But we have students who come in late because they are dropped off late. We have fifteen minutes allowed for this routine before we have to get to morning assembly which is for all k-4 students. So what do you recommend for those kids who are consistently arriving late or dawdling at their cost hook and not getting to the morning routine at all or only one or two steps?

This only works if you have students that follow directions.   When you lay out all guidelines and rules and practice routines, did you ever have students that refuse to obey? There are times when you need support services outside of your classroom.

Your videos are very interesting — a lot of what you say goes against “common sense,” which I find fascinating. I’m watching from South America. I had two questions: Is this applicable to kindergarten settings? Is this based on any evidence, and is there some bibliography you could recommend so I can learn more?

Thank you very much for your time and wisdom

If you have students like the lot inE.R. Braithwaite 's 'To sir with love ' the methods  todeal with them will be his only. Normal students can be handled with these methods but ghost who  don't have the atmosphere of education ,study or importance of education at home won't be quiet by these methods. I worked as a teacher for thirty years in India and didn't have pro lems of this type but when I started teaching my maid's kids, they had a lot of concentration problems.

It's the Do Now on the Board
Then it's the Objective.

I have written down notes from your lecture today :) . I agree with you and these are great ideas, they are simple, can be tried out, and have a higher purpose,  You talk about ideals, Ideals is what we all need - both teachers and students.

I purchased the High School plan from your website for $7 dollars but my district is blocking my using the link to open this concerns me that there is something fraudulant about your products.

Wow. Teacher, do more, and more, and more. Student please please please be extremely impressed by how your teacher does things “differently” and their infallible routines.
Those things are fine, to some extent, but before that can be effective, whatsoever, there has to be  an effect, appropriate, steadfast system in place. One of which sets the stage for the teacher to approach things creatively for classroom management (if they so choose to, but shouldn’t need to) or establish routines that compliment the system already in place. To insinuate that it is the teacher’s ability to divert or have acceptable behavior from their said routines is ludicrous and irresponsible.  The rhetoric in this video is what one would expect from a “professional development” seminar that only benefits the highly overpaid presenter, and those that are desperate enough to attempt these methods are only left in frustration. Typical rhetoric that the state endorses and is pleased to have this toxicity emphasized without rebuttal. Much more to say, but I’ll leave it there.
