Rap isn't always about what's happening in real life. This is mostly lyrical rap—it's about showing your skills, and when you say outlandish stuff like he did, people remember you. And it clearly worked.
This genre literally saved his life. P.S.Check out HBO's 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' acceptance speech of his, and Complex's 'Slim Shady vs. Marshall Mathers: THE FACE-OFF' video. You'll understand something.
His mum put drugs in his food from an early age. He was often beaten, hospitalised once by a bully called D'Angelo. They were broke broke. After sleeping on the floor before using his last bit of money to travel to the Rap Olympics in 1997, he made it to the final but lost and was devasted because he needed the prize money. Before he left, gutted and ready to give up, he handed someone a copy of his Slim Shady EP. It somehow got to Dre and the rest is history. Em did a lot of pills/weed but it escalated after his best friend Proof was killed. Years of pill addiction led to an OD where he almost died. He is now 17yrs sober.
Back in '99 (I was 17), I heard this album and instantly became a huge fan. When MMLP came out, I definitely became a Stan. Over all these years, he's gone from a student of rap to a legend of rap. As a matter of fact, he gave us an epic concept album last year, 25 years after this album you're listening to now. I feel honored to have witnessed his evolution, growth, and maturity. Genius is perfect to use if you want explanations for some lyrics 👍. Em himself even personally annotated some of his own stuff on there, but I don't think he's been active on the site for over a decade. Peace and love from Romania. Enjoy the ride.
👍 Awesome reaction. Please keep going with Eminem, and watch how he grows as an emcee and gets better and better! I’ll be looking for your reaction to MMLP!
Awesome as soon as I saw this on my homepage I clicked it right away this was a super dope reaction and honestly since you're so young and not super familiar with all the lore about Eminem it's way better that you read the lyrics on genius anyway I definitely appreciate when people have that site pulled up makes it way more entertaining hoping you're going to do more of Eminem's albums so I subscribed I don't want to give you any spoilers but hoping you'll do his next album The Marshall Mathers LP next honestly it's usually best if people do his library in somewhat chronological order anyway but my favorite albums to listen to and reactions to watch are The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show and Relapse 😃
So good that you made it! MMLP will be 3x better ES will be 4x better. I promise, and remember that eminem will start to be involved in producing in the next 2 albums
