That whole recovery system deserves a bit more attention. Early ones only had one bucket resulting in some hard decisions of whether to get more images, or deorbit immediately, regardless of how much film remained. That was the impetus for having multiple buckets on orbit. It was still limited, but no longer a one-and-done system. It's truly worth a deeper dive into the early evolving technology of satellite imagery vs. the history of mostly digital satellite imagery. It's not about program length. You've had us for 24 minutes, we aren't going leave if you take 5 or 10 more minutes to tell a fuller story with a focus on other interesting tidbits. If you're presenting thorough info worth watching 10 minutes, which you do, we will stick around to get the rest of the story. Remember, your target audience is older, and we DO have an attention span. That also means many of us grew up with Paul Harvey, and deeply miss The Rest of the Story.
The Corona program was the epitome of a literal blank check. The president knew it was possible, and to keep pushing the development until it worked, regardless of cost. When the rockets blew up on the pad, keep going, etc. I had a friend (R.I.P.) who worked on Corona for Lockheed, ironically troubleshooting the phenomenon of corona that was ruining that precious film. Corona is an electrical phenomenon that causes small sparks around moving parts (greatly simplified). If those sparks are happening on the surface of the film, whatever image that either would be, or had been exposed was garbage.
Also, for SAMOS, you oversimplify it to a FAX machine. Come on! You talk about the wait for consumer photos to be developed, but hardly mentioned that they launched an entire film developing lab into orbit to process the exposed film, before the electronic scanner could transmit the fuzzy images to the ground. It was a production on the ground to develop film, now automate it and put it into orbit. That's worth much more than an idle comment.
Fun experiment: take a roll of ordinary clear packing tape (the easy peel version doesn't work as well. The louder the "screech", the better), get the tape started into a ball you can grab easily, go into a very dark room and quickly yank a length of tape. You will see a line of lightning right at the point where the tape separates from the roll. It works best in low humidity. THIS is corona. Imagine this happening on your undeveloped film.
