My personal interpretation of the final area and boss of EarthBound for what it has to convey about love, heroism, and detailing the design elements that make this a truly grand climax.

Hey, welcome to the secret description club! I guess leave a comment with the word "teeth" in it, so I know you saw this. It'll be our little secret ;)
Well, we're finally here. Giygas. After all these years. Can't believe it. Thank you all so much, for joining me on this journey. One episode left, now. :')

Clicked for Earthbound Violates You, stayed for The Giygas Analysis

The whole Giygas fight gets me choked up every time, the whole game builds Giygas up as a cold and calculated evil, but when you finally get to fight him, he’s a broken, warped mess of a creature that doesn’t know what it’s doing or what’s going on. And the whole praying segment always gets me as well. I wish I could play this game for the first time again.

There's something so hollowly haunting about "You cannot grasp the true form of Giygas' attack!" Perfectly encapsulates the feeling of coming up against an indescribable, all-encompassing force.

"Earthbound takes you to dinner and remembers to use protection"

Still love that gygas was so mad about taking an L he went back in time to become an eldritch god of pure hate and evil

Giygas terrifies me so much especially as a child because there really aren’t any answers. You aren’t thinking about anything but the pure fear infront of you

@Flower_Mom 1 month ago

Giygas' face always looked like someone screaming in pain and/or terror to me. In his quest to make the rest of the universe suffer, the one he caused to suffer most was himself.

what I love about Pokey in this game is that he's the perfect contrast to Ness.
As you said, Ness was able to grow up and face his responsibilities, while Pokey ran away multiple times, trying to stay in his fantasy world.
But I wanna point out that their outfits and designs go a bit further:
The only thing you see to distinguish Ness is his lucky red cap, a symbol of childhood and innocence, doing what he thinks is right, while Pokey is wearing a business suit, something you would identify a grown man and maturity, and yet, he's acting completely selfish, wanting to be the cool one.
Pokey is a child in a man's body, while Ness is a man in a child's body.

I always tear up at Ness's Mom praying for her son after just a feeling of him being in danger.

This game hits so much harder as a parent than it did when I was just a teen. The definition of a masterpiece

Shigesato Itoi really woke up one day and asked himself "how can I make fictions most tragic villains for Nintendo?"

Pokey/Porky's skin change is also in line with humans under Giygas' control. Annoying Old Party Man, Annoying Reveler, and Extra Cranky Lady are all blue on the world map. Then there's Carpainter and the "blue blue" chanting Happy Happiests.

I always interpreted Pokey’s color change as the evil influence of Giygas and time travel destroying his body and his skin beginning to rot, almost like a zombie.

I will NEVER forget the way the finale of this game made me feel.

I like how the series antagonists going from mother 1 where it's just gygas. Then in mother 2 gygas has lost physical form and porky is there guiding the force left over. And then mother 3 porky has become gygas' true and real avatar

Remember, no crying until the end.

When Giygas's sprite is duplicated in the second half of the fight, not only do you have the baby silhouette, but if you flip the sprites upside down they heavily resemble the Gigue sprite in Mother.
