Intermediate guitarists but the first time I am trying to use metronome.

The goal is to play in sync with the metronome not just in tempo.

My metronome drive me crazy and, like you said, I often get a little ahead of it. I now only use it for practising scales. When strumming songs, I find a drum machine so much easier.

I've been practicing with a metronome recently and it's amazing how much it improves you. There's just one drawback, you'll become much more aware of how bad the people you play music with are at keeping time.

I can't be the only one that hears the song im playing in my head while i play. That's what keeps me on beat.

If you want to understand why most guitarists cannot play in time and are therefore impossible to work with, check out the comments on a metronome video for guitarists and metronome videos for drummers, pianists or, indeed. any other instrument.

Honestly the metronome is so frustrating for me. It is honestly why I gave up on guitar on the first place. I mean my skills are pretty good and I can play certain songs on time from memory but when it comes to playing with a metronome or other people it's hard for me to connect the left and right brain. Makes me wonder how many other would be great guitarists get stuck in this purgatory....Giving it another shot at 31, taking lessons from a friend of Satriani, if it can be done I'm going to do it as long as I'm physically able.

Thank you. This is really helpful to learn chord changes to new or difficult chords. I have been working on C to Bm and I found that if I use the metronome say at 50 BPS it really helps and then I can slowly get faster as I feel comfortable with the chord change.

Opposite problem here. I NEED to break free of the Metronome sometimes! Being also a drummer, we like metronomes a lot so I tend to use it all the time unless using a backing track or music.

Just starting out so I bought a Boss DB90 and my timing isn't terrible, but if I try to play scales for instance I find it that I easily get ahead or behind the beat without noticing. Right hand on its own at reasonable BPM, not that hard. I see myself using it long term as I learn scales and chords, since I'm on my own for the time being. It's pretty intuitive if you're tech minded 🙂

only metronome I've ever used, was the little gnome down in the subways

I am learning fingerpicking, I have played for almost 20 years without a metronome, even when I was in a band I just listen to my rhythm section and strum along, but I never did learn to fingerpick, whenever I tried I would just get flustered and my fingers never could fall in line. Now I'm 40 and I am a calmer guy, I understand slow is smooth and smooth is fast, and I am using a metronome to build speed, cleanly, with my finger picking patterns, counting the notes as I go. I started last weekend and I do believe I will be singing my first fingerpicking song by the end of this week. I have never improved this quickly at any guitar skill, and truly very few skills in general. It's amazing how the ability to calm down and relax in practice can speed improvement, uncontrolled tension kills performance.

Ive been playing since i was a teen, going on 10 years now i always felt like i could approach guitar by ear and for the most part i was fine doing that and watching lessons on how to play songs, and picked up little things from songs i liked like sweeping and fast 3 note per string patterns. But i could never properly speak the language of music other than "hey that sounds good lets build on that". Learning theory now as an intermediate player has opened up and connected everything i know and has been a BLAST to learn !

Thank you for this video. I just started playing guitar for a new hobby (yesterday was my second lesson) and got one of the apps for tuning and such and saw the metronome feature within it. Good to know I can use that to really learn how beats work.

@StuartTufft 4 years ago

The metronome is one of those things that I never thought I would need to use. I can strum pretty well to the beat; however, like many other people here, I have found that I end up speeding up when I strum! I really struggle to keep time without tapping my foot. If you have trouble, maybe a bit of good ole' foot tapping!
