External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has repeatedly delivered sharply worded responses on India-Pakistan relations, terrorism and dialogue — and some of those exchanges have become major talking points.
In the latest episode at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Jaishankar hit back at a Pakistani journalist who questioned India over alleged sponsorship of terrorism. Jaishankar responded, “A terrorist country is asking me that question. Come on.” The exchange took place during a press interaction linked to maritime security and the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers.
But this is not the first time Jaishankar has used unusually direct language while discussing Pakistan. In 2024, he said the era of “uninterrupted dialogue” with Pakistan was over and stressed that “actions have consequences.”
Following the 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation, Jaishankar also said that talks with Pakistan would focus on terrorism and maintained India's position that bilateral dealings should remain strictly bilateral.
