Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc has a cast chock-full of Ultimates that come in every shape, size, and capacity. Yet, even at their apex, certain cast members fail to leave a positive impact on their audience. This is one such unfortunate soul.

Today, we're going to determine why Yasuhiro Hagakure, the Ultimate Clairvoyant, failed to foresee his inevitable unpopularity and how we can rewrite the past to provide him with a brighter future.

Holy shit Yasuhiro misremembering his forgotten memories as predictions is actually genius and would serve as great foreshadowing

@johnwebb2736 2 years ago

I love the change of motivation you did for Hiro hitting Sakura with a bottle. Not only does it make him less of a douch bag, but it also ties into the established rules of his talent. Hiro’s predictions are canonically right 30% of the time, and in this rewrite, he would have used it three times with one out of three being correct. The irony being the one time where his prediction was correct, he completely doubted it and made a rash decision.

Second least favorite!? Lower than Leon?? This is why you can't trust polls. 😞
Much like Dan Avidan, I loved my boy Hiro! He's an amiable doofus that radiates a friendly charm despite his (self-inflicted) woes. I agree with you that he can be improved upon. However, in a game with a narrative that's often grim and heartbreaking as Danganronpa is, and with characters as annoying as Byakuyu and Togo are (sorry, not sorry), I appreciate the levity he brings.

I really like a lot of what you've laid down here, the idea of Hiro misremembering his past as predictions is really fucking good! However, there is one point that I'd disagree with you on.

Hiro does... technically have an arc, although it's not the most obvious and doesn't last longest.

After Mondo's passing, and Taka becomes basically catatonic, Hiro tries to step up as leader. He tries to pull Taka into conversation and keep him involved, saying that he feels responsible as he's the oldest in the group. It's after he's framed for the third trial that he seems to conclude that he's not fit to lead.

I... kinda think that should be built on. That feeling of responsibility and that he should be looking out for those younger than him. I think Hiro's got his heart in the right place, even if he fumbles pretty hard sometimes. I do like Hiro as a character, even if he's a goof sometimes.

It’s true, the guy’s got so many shortcomings

I’d also kinda wish his free time events establish him to be more friendly since his last one ends with him begging Makoto to offer up his organs to sell to pay off the debt he has

But I guess what keeps me thinking he’s likeable comes down to 1 moment, him taking over as the leader maintaining Taka’s routine of gathering everyone to the cafeteria and starting off breakfast

It’s nice, and shows me he’s a nice guy underneath everything else

Not to mention, the first person to respond to Makoto’s “Hope” bullet to shake off the despair, I kinda thought the series could lean in on him essentially being Makoto’s number 2 in terms of positive outlook and optimism, (still panicky and stupid, but stupidly and charmingly optimistic)

Ironically, if we analyze the entire trajectory of the first game, it makes sense that Yasuhiro managed to survive despite being a complete idiot. It was impossible for him to be a victim in chapters 1 & 2 since the murders happened in the heat of the moment and none of the killers (Leon/Mondo) had reasons to kill him. While in chapter 3 Celeste could have tried to kill him, but she needed to of someone stupid enough to put all the blame on Trial, so keeping Hiro alive was essential for her, and in chapter 4 there was no murder at all.

As someone who loves learning about spirituality, religions, tarot cards etc. I immediately liked Hiro and only liked him more and more throughout the game. I guess I just like silly characters, too so that helped me like him. The only thing I didn’t like is they made him a con man which is funny but eh they could’ve made him so much more than comedic relief. He barely has a character arc it’s just thrown in at the end of the game basically.

I think there could be a good character development with Yasuhiro where he continues to have his bad fortunetelling. One where he begins by relying so much on his fortune telling that it's a crutch for him; then in a later class trial he is able to meaningfully contribute without the need for his "talent". I don't know how that would be specifically executed, but I think that would make him a much better character than the one that we got. :/

@Now_Roxas 6 months ago (edited)

He's really the only one with nothing specific to do.
Byakuka has like, most of the game with being somewhat helpful, or at least interesting (Also Toko)
Toko has Genocide(r) Jack/Jill/Sho, and that's always a thing
Kyoko is Kyoko, if you've played the game, I don't need to explain
Aoi has all of Case 4 to do stuff, as well as having some character, as well as the other times.
Makoto is the protagonist, and the worst of the 3 games I've played, but he fits really well in this game.
Hiro really doesn't do much but be accused in Chapter 3.
(Also as an unrelated side note, I like how 3 different people admit to killing Sakura, and it was a suicide)

I just wanted to say that it makes sense that Hiro’s fortune telling is pretty underused, as if he could just predict anything it’d make the killing game too easy. Plus, he did get the ‘no more murders’ and the bad ending right.

Bro what??? We need a mod that includes these changes.

I liked him in the anime

well iwth this video i can say that as the one fan of hagakure, definitely some good suggestions are here. i actually think his character makes sense as throughout the game he is still lit with his very stupid personality but hopeful personality. however, i do wish that they would have done more with his character since he had a lot of room to be an interesting character. however, i personally dont think he ISNT interesting, just approached in a much different way. i like his jokes and rambles too

still amazing ideas though and again i think he has a lot of room for improvement! good video

i also wanna put my ranking of thh characters since apparently the fanbase is much different from me (im not including mukuro and junko since those 2 are a mess in the game for me personally)

15. leon kuwata
14. sayaka maizono
13. toko fukawa
12. mondo owada
11. hifumi yamada
10. byakuya togami
09. genocide jill
08. celestia ludenberg
07. yasuhiro hagakure
06. chihiro fujisaki
05. kiyotaka ishimaru
04. aoi asahina
03. kyoko kirigiri
02. makoto naegi
01. sakura ogami

I lik all the ideas, i do question if him bein a bumblin bafoon is a part of him puttin up an act to where hell stay in school, lik if he acts stupid and such, this means hell stay safe, there also could b a small chance that he put up this act for so long that he doesnt know how else to act so 2 speak

Again, i do think uve done a wonderful job (and i might use some for a fic im workin on), though this idea i hav might explain why he acts the way he is
