Senator Sheldon Whitehouse delivers a fiery Senate-floor speech attacking legislation he argues would shift wealth toward billionaires, major corporations and fossil-fuel interests. Whitehouse criticizes proposed tax changes, increased borrowing, health-care impacts and provisions affecting clean-energy development. He also argues that reducing clean-energy growth could increase electricity costs and weaken U.S. competitiveness in emerging energy technologies. His speech features a dramatic comparison involving a parasitic wasp, which he uses to describe what he sees as the influence of special interests over Republican lawmakers. Whitehouse concludes by arguing that ordinary Americans could bear the costs of the legislation.
