2nd story about not closing curtains: in WW II no light was allowed to be seen at night to avoid bombing. Everybody had to put heavy black paper in their windows and even a small strip of light was fined. Directly after the war people celebrated their freedom by opening their view on the streets.

If you use your card on public transport make sure you swipe it again on your way off so you don't get charged the max, only for the part of the trip you actually took. I always look forward to visiting beautiful Amsterdam where my daughter lives!

Just traveled to Amsterdam (I'm from NYC) for the first time last week and I have to say these were spot on! I was really struck by its uniqueness in every aspect!

One thing I was not prepared for when visiting Amsterdam is that the canals are in arcs, as are the roads and bridges. I come from a place where most cities are built on a grid and you can walk or drive straight to wherever you wish to go. In Amsterdam, one must account for the arc or you’ll never get to your planned destination. If you see a building or church off in the distance and head straight for it, you’ll miss it .
And one more thing: the most dangerous sound in Amsterdam is the little “ ring ring” of a bicycle bell 😊

Tip voor een dagje Amsterdam: begin met een boottochtje, ga naar de markt op de Albert Cuyp, eet een broodje kroket, relax in het Vondelpark, slenter langs de grachten en score (als je durft) een rauwe haring, ga naar de Bijenkorf en eet tot slot in een leuk restaurantje in de Jordaan. Leuker wordt het niet 😀

Been to Amsterdam over 65 times in the last 40 yrs. Great music in Netherlands or anywhere an hour or so by train. Also the absolute best place to find Hashish from multiple sources. Dutch are the smartest in the world and always super nice.

Went to Amsterdam in 1990, against the wishes of my German uncle but who also paid for our car rental to go...? Had a fantastic time. It was nuts, we had no plan but went anyways (from NE Germany). Driving was silly, as you say, OMG. Such an amazing city, so vibrant and rich in history. Had Indonesian food too! We were huge fans of Thai food by that time...

Not only in Amsterdam but in the whole of the Netherlands you just can drink water from the tap. Netherlands has perfect drinkingwater

I’m just back from my first trip to Amsterdam and I’m going back in March because it was love. Walking and using public transportation to get where I need to go feels right to my body. I hate having to own a car in the States. First day back and I was driving on the highway only to almost be killed by a rude trucker.
What appeals to me the most about The Netherlands (from what I’ve experienced) are the people. It’s not about a warmth and openness, but a general flow of society that’s like a dance. People riding their bikes without helmets because they don’t fear someone zipping around a corner to speed past them. There was a harmony that I enjoyed.
I’m going alone this time instead of with my daughter. I want to see it by myself. It feels like a place where one can grow old and be alone, but not isolated.

When Indonesia became a republic after the war most Dutch moved to Den Haag (The Hague, also beautiful) so most excellent Indonesian (actually Indisch, which refers to the fusion dishes from the colonial times) restaurants are found there

Was in Amsterdam recently and fell in love with the city! We did rent a car since we were staying outside the city center and wanted to visit nearby sites. I was the designated driver, and en route to the car rental agency which was located in the city center during rush hour, I was taken aback by the amount of bikes in the city. Needless to say it was a bit intimidating, but was thankful I was the driver since you really need to be a multi tasker and an observant one to navigate the narrow streets with the amount of bikes, pedestrians and the trams which share the streets with vehicular traffic.

Great video. I picked up some tips This August will be our 3rd trip to Amsterdam. It's a fantastic city and everyone's friendly Centraal Station is worthy of an entire day to visit. The two hidden restaurants ,COOP'S and then touring the city by tran is amazing. Rejiksmuseum will be our 3rd visit. Thanks for posting
