How can a person doing the same job struggle to make ends meet on one side of the border while simultaneously planning for the future on the other? We're exploring this question on a road trip from Istanbul to Romania.

My mother and I set off from Istanbul, cross into Bulgaria via Kapıkule, and reach Romania via the Vidin-Calafat Bridge over the Danube. Our final stop on the first day is Arad.

Along the way, we discuss the hidden costs of the trucks waiting at Kapıkule, Schengen, Bulgarian politics, and the history of the Balkans. Is converting prices to Turkish lira enough to understand a country? How many hours does it take to work for a tank of gasoline? How much does building a bridge change the lives of the people living around it?

In this section, stretching from the Danube coast to the roads of Romania, we look at the economy behind the landscapes we see.

On the road, the Academy's European journey begins.
