I always remember 1973 as the greatest Triple Crown  & Secretariat has remained a special place in my heart.  Have read every book on him.

I remember 1973 like it was yesterday.  I turned 17 years old during Secretariat's Triple Crown run.

In 1973, the cease-fire in the Vietnam War was falling apart, the Watergate scandal was in full swing, the U.S. had an oil crisis, and the general mood in the U.S. was terrible.

Then, along came this racehorse with the odd name of "Secretariat".  He was the 1972 Horse of the Year as a 2-year-old and he was the latest hope to win horse racing's Triple Crown in 1973, after several horses had tried and failed to win the Triple Crown in the years since Citation last won the Triple Crown in 1948.

Secretariat won his first two races in 1973, then uncharacteristically lost his last race before the Kentucky Derby, finishing 3rd.

Then, in the span of FIVE WEEKS, from May 5th to June 9th, Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, ALL IN RECORD TIMES, and MILLIONS of Americans had a NEW HERO to cheer for-
NOT a politician, NOT a military hero, NOT a musician or an actor or an author or some other human who accomplished something very special, but a RACEHORSE who captured the imaginations of tens of millions of Americans and who became the ONLY non-human or human to ever appear on the cover of three magazines, Time, Newsweek, and Sport Illustrated, in the same week.

THAT'S the Secretariat I personally remember and honor and love and THANK for the joy and happiness and respect and awe that he brought to so many Americans, who really NEEDED a HERO at that time in our history.

As a kid in the 70"s, I heard his name constantly without knowing his accomplishments.  I learned about him in the late 70's and read everything I could find.  He was a genetic combination which was the horse racing lottery.  He had an endearing quality about him which makes us love even more.  He was double lucky because of the team of people that loved him and cared for him, most notably, Eddie Sweat.

He was amazing and beautiful and sweet.  We were blessed to have experienced him.  ❤❤❤❤❤

I had the good fortune of watching every Triple Crown race by this magnificent horse at the age of 15. He was mesmerizing. The Belmont Actually DID bring tears to my eyes. Four years ago I visited his gravesite at Claiborne with my wife to pay my respect to him. He meant something special to me. This video is an excellent  representation of Secretariat’s place in history. May he never be forgotten. May “God’s Horse” records never be broken. 👍❤️

I was a high school kid working for Jack vanberg so was around the track all summer long every summer and I appreciate what secretary is done and he is the greatest of all time but I get so sick and tired of people who don't know a single other horse who don't know horse racing so in a way they can't really appreciate what he's done and there are other great great horses if you read the story of citation the number of times he ran and the number of times he lost I believe it was one and still came in second running three times the number or Ruffian who won in track or Stakes time every single time she ran they say she didn't run against much but she did she ran against time and she won every single time so there's some amazing Stories out there and although I love Secretariat no matter what the story's about it can be about a jockey somebody's going to throw in their love of Secretariat

Loved Yes Secretariat  will Always be the  G O A T!!!!!

The GOAT of GOATs! The apex performer of his and all species in sports history !  I watched his Belmont in 1973 and still remember exactly where I was standing when he crossed the finish line. Unforgettable!

When you describe Secretariat’s looks, stance, showmanship I was surprised that a frontal headshot photo wasn’t included as he was a Star above all with the white star on his regal face.
And unless it was a question of licensing I would have included the Cover of Time magazine he was on, AND the fact that he has been ranked #50 of the Top 100 Athletes (human and obviously animal) of all time.
Lastly, a snippet about how many horses he produced as a Stud that went on to win races. This past year (2026 I believe) all the Derby horses had lineage tied back to Secretariat.
He was and is The Greatest Horse in History.

Just my thoughts. Linda Hammerschmid -  Montreal, Canada
