In this video I discuss the Zeniko RF12M flash and I test and shoot the flash on my Hasselblad X2D II with the Hasselblad XCD 90V lens.

The Zeniko RF12M is a very compact, light-weight, universal and highly affordable (USD 50) flash which can be mounted to the hot shoe of most cameras from most brands. I tried the flash on my X2D II plus XCD 90V and was positively surprised how well this "fill flash" performed in a recent portrait and half-body photo shooting with Stephanie.

@14:40 you find a short mini tutorial on manual flash photography which might be useful for people who relied on automatic TTL flash photography so far and want to learn in 5 minutes how to quickly choose correct flash intensities.

Remark 1: Just to avoid misunderstandings, the two words “fill flash” describe the light’s role: supplementing existing illumination, commonly to brighten shadows. It does not necessarily describe a flash’s size or limited reach. Small flashes like the Zeniko RF12M are useful as "fill light", adding illumination to faces and lifting shadows in existing light.

Remark 2: @22:09 I mention my personal preference for natural and available light. However, I am not saying that with softboxes you cannot produce soft flash illumination. You find very good tutorials on how to do that on YouTube. All I am saying - my personal taste and approach - is that I generally prefer available light and don’t particularly like an obvious direct-flash look.

Remark 3: Hasselblad also recommends in addition to disabling Exposure Simulation also to disable True Exposure when a flash is the main light source.

Remark 4: @19:36: the live experimenting in the studio has a shutter speed of 1/100sec while later with Stephanie I used a much faster shutter speed of 1/1000sec to freeze potential movements of Stephanie. But, as said in the video, all images are consistently shot with widest open aperture f/2.5 and native ISO 50.

One minor typo which deserves correction:
@13:24 I say "... at f/2.8 ..." but mean of course (see context) f/2.5 - the widest open aperture on the Hasselblad XCD 90V.
