White political pundits talk about Woke 1 like they were forced into camps.  Then when they give examples it's things like "we had to turn our IG profile photo Black" 😂  This is all so incredibly stupid.

Team Jamelle. So sick of people talking about the excesses of "woke" when the administration is literally killing people on the street.

I’m so glad Jamelle said that about the definition of woke, because I have grown very irritated with its usage now. While I disagree that only 20 people think of it this way I do think most Black people understand how the word has been misused.

Jamelle is working so hard to choose specific language to navigate this space; I really appreciate the work he's doing here. I'm very annoyed that he clearly is working so much harder and smarter than the other hosts.

Not to get all "woke 1", but there are plenty of white people who understand the word "woke" in its original context as well. To have a white woman tell him a word he uses doesn't mean what he says it means is already condescending, but to explicitly tell him that he isn't correct about it in his lived, cultural context she will never (and clearly refuses) to understand is gross. I feel deeply for what it must be like for him to have to work with these people on the daily.

I can't imagine a work environment where people talk openly about their weird, personal fear of buying books they don't want to read to stabilize their perceived social standing and safety. Or that doing so is some kind of grand, systemic, "censorship" program that caused anywhere near as much pain as anything the current regime has done. He always manages to stay jovial and kind in these interactions and it's just awful that the people around him are still empowered to say this stuff with their whole chest with no accountability while he's working twice as hard as them to counter their anti-factual misinformation and mischaracterizations of reality. Meanwhile, every time he comes to the table with a new, non-rehashed take, it's either heavily researched and nuanced or forwarded by heavy caveat about it being his personal opinion.

This woke 1 stuff could have been a teachable moment of reflection, but they just refused to hear his point, talked over him, and moved on. I don't think most people who behave like this should be silenced, because people need to be able to make mistakes to learn from them. But there has to be an openness to reflection. And behavior like this should be held to account and the reflection and repair should be as public as the dismissiveness and ignorance was, especially on a platform with any kind of reach. I hope that reflection and repair was at least done in private.

Just to be clear, this is a public request for kindness, honesty, and openness - I'm not looking to file a report with the House Asleep Activities Committee or sell any white women a book I wrote wrapped in kente cloth. Even though I clearly could, having the power of a youtube commentor (which we all know is equal to the anti-woke movement that has forced birth concentration camps for immigrant girls SA'd in detention).

My god. Jamelle might be the only redeemable part of this failing institution.

Jamelle is correct to push back on the revisionism that has all but erased the real history of the term "woke." He rightly shines a light on propaganda and calls out his colleagues for their intellectual and journalistic laziness.
Also, it's astonishing that David continues to contend that the "woke" backlash against Trump 1.0 policies brought us to where we are while also objecting to "Trump injustice." Pick a side, man...
And I'm not sure why Michelle Cottle is here unless NYT is trying to sound more like Fox or something. She has nothing to add but irritation....

What David describes as “wokeness” is perhaps the first time powerful white people were directly impacted by left-leaning free speech.
