Guitar Hero was one of the most dominant franchises of the early to mid-2000s. Between Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2, and Guitar Hero 3 - Activision, Harmonix, and RedOctane made BILLIONS of dollars. So, why did the Guitar Hero series die?

GH2 literally saved my life. I was a medic in Iraq 2006-2007, we had a rotating 24 shift for our aid station in case of medevacs. I put off doing some paper work in the back office and played GH in our tiny waiting room. The back part of the aid station was hit by a rocket that night where I usually would have been working. My mom got me Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock bundled with the guitar for my Xbox 360 for christmas one year. That was a good goddamn christmas. Stayed up all night trying to beat Story of My Life on Medium without missing a note. Never did it.

Activision killed it by releasing too many too soon instead of going the Rock band route and releasing it as dlc. I still play it on my drum set with 1000+ songs

Big plastic guitar shaped controllers and paying high prices for licensed music does not equate to profitability.

3 is so popular and perfect that you can still find arcade cabinet versions of it in some arcades to this day, its at my local Round 1

I grew up playing both Rockband and Guitar Hero. While Guitar Hero did a better job at marketing towards families and building a band with your family, Rockband focused on the music. I still remember to this day my dad getting us 4 kids a guitar hero kit. It came with drums, a guitar, and a mic. Boy do I miss those days.

It's also worth mentioning that rock music in general isn't nearly as popular in the mainstream as it was in the 00s.

I feel like something should be said about Clone Hero. It’s a fan-made game using open source software to essentially copy Guitar Hero’s system. There is a HUGE community behind it creating custom tracks that anyone can download and import. It’s huge for those who yearn for a new Guitar Hero release

I’m 60 and did not grow up with video games in the home so I never really got into them but I bought guitar hero for my daughter and tried it and I was hooked we had hours of fun playing she would play lead and I would play the bass lines. I have really fond memories of Guitar Hero

And still to this day, I tell my young kids about how "their Dad used to be in a rock band back in the day". I miss Rock Band Sundays when my buddies and I used to have drinks while rocking out to GH 2 & 3 and Rock Band 1 & 2. Those were the good ol' days!

One thing that also happened was that the people playing got older. They moved on to a different point in their lives.

I remember when my mom got me guitar hero 3 but my PlayStation was 2.5 hours away at my dad’s house. So I had to sit there and admire that big box and guitar controller for soooo long (felt like an eternity at that age). It did not disappoint when I finally got to play it. Probably my favorite one of the franchise, so nostalgic.

24:48 well that aged like fine wine, but Instead of bringing Gutair Hero back they instead make ai generated ads for a Guitar Hero mobile game that doesn't actually exist.
