The Jesus of Revelation Is Evil — Bart D. Ehrman Explains

MythVision TV

In Revelation 2:22, Jesus says he will throw a woman called Jezebel onto a bed, plague the men who sleep with her, and kill her children.

Let that sink in.

In this intense episode of MythVision Podcast, we confront one of the most disturbing passages in the New Testament and ask a question most Christians never hear:

Is the Jesus of Revelation the same Jesus found in the Gospels?

Joined by Bart D. Ehrman, we explore the violent apocalyptic imagery of Revelation, the Jezebel passage, the threat of sexual punishment and infanticide, and why this vision of Christ sharply contradicts the teachings of Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

We also examine:
– Why Revelation promotes torture rather than annihilation
– How Rome, not the modern world, is the true enemy of the book
– Why the Rapture is not in the Bible
– How apocalyptic expectations failed — both for Jesus and for John of Patmos
– Whether understanding historical context leads people away from fundamentalism

This is not an attack on faith. It’s an honest confrontation with the text — one that challenges literal readings, exposes theological tension, and forces viewers to ask whether Revelation’s Christ reflects Jesus… or something else entirely.

Viewer discretion advised. This discussion is not for the faint of heart.

I couldn't find anything in the text to support the claim, "Men come have sex with her. We're not told if
they are raping her or if she's willing to have sex with them."

The stuff they don't talk about in Sunday school.

Why the torture? Who tortures? Who desires revenge the most?

This is added for my earlier comment: Excavations at Carthaginian sites, particularly the Tophet of Salammbô, have uncovered thousands of urns containing the remains of infants and small children, which some scholars believe were sacrifices offered to Baal Hammon and Tanit.

any deity that scripture that threatens children is no deity at all, but either the invention of corrupt humans who want blind obedience from followers and seek obedience via fear or as the early Christians said ( who were labeled the Gnostics) a false and imperfect god of evil called Saklas and Yaldabaoth ( whom also the ancients in my opinion called Set, and Typhon).

The only way a being could ever have a name not given by others,is to incarnate into a physical body have a language and voice box to say it and know it and that's not almighty to me.

What Paul knew that John didn’t was “If you don’t eat the meat, you can’t have your pudding. How can you have your pudding if you don’t eat the meat???!!!”

Ever since I heard this I couldn’t unhear it. Imagine wearing a noose around your neck, a form of punishment/death/suffering to HONOR your savior or whatever, THAT is what the cross is. I actually think it’s kind of sadistic and it could even be a cruel sarcastic “honor” given by the Roman’s, a sick joke

Of course he's evil. They're trying to scare their enemies. In their hearts, they knew it was all bullshite.

Religion is ALL about POWER, not truth or reality.

This is what happened when evil men put their intentions in a book they called from God. Terrible delusion this is

So long as the scriptures is seen and translated literally, without spiritual understanding, this is what you get. "The letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life"! Enough said!

Revelations was my favorite book as a Christian. To put a very long story short, I realized that I was looking outside of myself for justice and peace, to relieve me of my trauma. No one is coming to save me. Not even God. The power is now back in my hands. My abuse was random, uncalculated. There was no grand purpose for it. This means that I get to release it and start anew, detached from what happened to me back then. I no longer live in spite of trauma, I live because today is a better day, and my identity is not tied to what has happened or will happen to me or my testimony of overcoming a tragic past with Christ on my side; it is tied to my personal choices.

The preterists have Paul, Jesus and John saying the same thing with the destruction of the temple in 70AD.

For an atheist Bart does a damn good job of increasing my love and faith in Jesus. ❤️🙏🏼

This discussion reminds me of the book THE BAD JESUS by the NT scholar the late Hector Avalos of Iowa State University. The book is linguistically dense. I knew professor Avalos, and on a few occasions it was my good fortune to have coffee with him. It's a challenging book, well worth the effort to understand how the languages of the NT and OT intersect with history.

Jesus does predict torture though - isn't that what the weeping and gnashing of teeth is about in Matthew 13:42? He also adopts Nebuchadnezzar's "fiery furnace" as his preferred fate for his enemies.

No matter how you slice it fellow ministers, you can not sanitize the Book of Revelation! You cannot metaphoricalize it into some Song of Solomon. No wonder it didn't officially make it in the cannon until...what? 419? I agree with Bart, it doesn't fly with the persona of Jesus presented in the Gospels.
