For decades, Slab City has stood as one of America’s most unusual communities—a place built around abandoned military infrastructure, independence, and a collection of people and institutions that created a unique way of life in the California desert.
In this 55-minute documentary, I trace the history of Slab City from its beginnings in 1942 as the military camp known as Dunlap, through its transformation over the following decades. I explore the community’s growth during the 1980s, including the development of its trade circle, medical services, gathering places, and the institutions that helped hold Slab City together.
The story then moves into 2026 and what I describe as the community’s collapse. I examine the fires that destroyed the Blue Church and the Dome, the closing of the House of Dots, and the destruction of the Church of Enlightenment. Rather than focusing only on the buildings themselves, this video looks at the institutions, people, and social spaces that made these places important to Slab City.
Finally, I examine what I believe has happened to the community as crime, instability, and lawlessness have increasingly overtaken the Slabs—and ask what remains of the Slab City that once was.
