I feel like John didn't want Hal to ruin the sentiment of him and his bird any further because he can't stand the thought of Hal tainting the idea of his little friend being there still at the end of the day so he decided to kill the moment and not just the bird himself....he wanted to do it on his terms and not have that outside negative energy overshadow what the bird meant to him.

"'It's a pocket dimension, Jr. Just feel around in there and you'll find it'. Incidentally, is what I'd like to say to Hal Jordan", made me snortle so loudly my wife had to poke her head out of the next room to find out what was so funny.

A lesser show would have had John withhold information once he saw all the alien goo Hal left in the car. No need for that tension, let’s work together

I started tearing up when the jessica cruz panel was read alone and i was shocked a little because i love jessica cruz i have since 2014. But i dont think ive revisted those early comics of her recently and that hit so hard for me. Because ive never found a medication that makes my social anxiety easier to manage. And i relate to jessica saying she fights it every day. And it means so much to me that shes now the leader of the green lanterns

Proximity only means physical nearness. Close implies a deeper emotional connection in the contesxt. Are you aliens? Another great podcast.

I was half-expecting Earl to start talking in JB Smoove's voice.

To answer your question-In the comics the GLs project a green aura. This acts as a shield from damage, being able to fly and breathe in space. It’s really my biggest gripe with how the powers are displayed in the show. When he flies or fights he should have a green aura, otherwise lanterns are just regular joes

RE: proximity vs. closeness, I even thought proximity was the better word in that context. To the point where I wondered if this was a trap to see if Anton would cede the point or if he'd be like "No, I'm human, and I know proximity is the right word."

Great stuff!
Thank you for highlighting the misconception of “you’re nothing without the ring.” So far, the show is a delight, but I take some issue with the framing of John as being more worthy than Hal, who was picked at random. But folks are forgetting (or don’t know) that the literal point of the Corps is that it’s NOT random. The ring finds people who are worthy, from doctors to teachers to soldiers to artists (all canon professions of various Lanterns).

PS: love the Melanie Lynskey shout-out! Funnily enough, she’s jn Yellowjackets, another show that uses past and future timelines for its storytelling.

Oh man, congrats Mal, I remember games at Memorial. Lobby Bill for a 'The Prestige' Rewatchables, it's still my fave Nolan.

I think that he doesnt want to charge the ring fully because if he keeps it locked on the lantern his consciousness may back up again

Hal is most likely lying when he said he was out fighting a galactic war and got drunk after. I think Hal lays at home, feeds his pet and drinks. That is probably why the Guardians want someone new. He doesn’t charge the ring, he doesn’t bring the lantern, he’s not really training Jon, and he doesn’t back up his consciousness. What threw him off was the message about Rushville, he wasn’t expecting that.
