Acatenango, Guatemala 🌋 Hiking Acatenango near Antigua was easily the hardest hike we've ever done — it's not even close.
It's steep, you start above 2,000m already, it's freezing, you're carrying a full pack, and every step feels harder than the last. So why do so many backpackers take it on? The views. Watching Volcán de Fuego erupt at night is spectacular... especially on a clear night like we got.
Fuego is the most active volcano in Latin America, erupting on average every 15 minutes. Most eruptions are small but stunning to watch; others are bigger and genuinely dangerous.
⚠️ A word of warning: this hike is currently closed due to increased volcanic activity. If you're planning this trip, please research current access and safety conditions before you go.
This is our experience; hopefully it gives you a real sense of what this mammoth challenge involves.
