Alfred Joseph Hitchcock CBE (Leytonstone, London; August 13, 1899 – Bel Air, Los Angeles; April 29, 1980) was a British-born American film director and producer. He pioneered many of the techniques that characterize the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema, working on silent films and early sound films, which led him to be considered England's greatest director, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939.

Throughout a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock developed a distinctive and highly recognizable cinematic style. He was innovative in his use of the camera to mimic a person's gaze, thus compelling viewers to participate in a form of voyeurism. He employed framing to evoke anxiety, fear, or empathy and developed a novel form of film editing. His stories often feature fugitives from the law, and his leading actresses are usually blonde. Many of his films feature plot twists and disturbing narratives revolving around violence, murder, and crime. Often, the mysteries that drive the plots are merely decoys (MacGuffins, as the director himself called them) that serve to advance the story but have no real significance to the narrative. Hitchcock's films also frequently explore themes of psychoanalysis and have strong sexual undertones. Thanks to cameos in many of his films, interviews, promotional trailers for his movies, and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents, the filmmaker became a cultural icon.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty films over six decades. Often recognized as the greatest British filmmaker, he topped a 2007 poll of film critics conducted by The Daily Telegraph. The newspaper described him as follows: "Undoubtedly the greatest filmmaker born in these islands, Hitchcock did more than any other director to shape modern cinema, which would have been entirely different without him." MovieMaker magazine has described him as the most influential director of all time, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important artists in film history.
