The main reason for these drills is to condition people to act calm in dangerous situations because in short it's safer. When people panic, they make stupid and contradictive decisions. They may also trample others while trying to escape, further injuring or killing others. Remaining calm and relaying on training allows for everyone to most effectively reduce their risks. As for active shooter training, the reason they hide in classrooms despite the shooter probably knowing people are there is to delay the shooter as long as possible for law enforcement to respond.

There's more reasons to explain why each of these drills are conducted the ways they are, but that would take too long. Also there are probably better ways some of these drills can be executed, but none that are standardized.

As a former school cook (about 350-400 students), I really tried to make sure the kids got good chow. So many of the regulations for school lunch are kind of dumb: doesn't matter how super nutritious it is if they throw the food in the trash.

One reason you're supposed to walk is not just trampling risk. Many people moving in the same direction can jam up doorways. So walking can evacuate an entire building faster.

For tornadoes, you gather in the hallways and do the fetal position, because flying glass and debris is one of the biggest dangers. Even if the tornado doesn't hit the building directly, it can still break windows and fling debris into classrooms. The fetal position presents the smallest target and your hands protect your head and neck.

You're nearly to 20k subs! 😀

Dang. But actually....that's why my mom often provided me lunch boxes until I think my college graduation.

Steve kerr's son is the scariest thing in the world D:

For a tornado drill you go into the hallway because it’s an interior “room” and only has windows on the exterior airlock type double doors set (nobody is allowed to sit a certain distance from those doors just incase) and the small reinforced window on the classroom doors.  My district had us sit down and bring our knees up to our chest tuck our head between our knees and cover our neck/head with our hands as best as possible.  This protects vital areas as well as you can.  I’m from Texas and we don’t really do basements in this state but maybe other more tornado prone states have storm cellars in their schools.  Schools are more strongly reinforced but you get up to a EF4-5 and not much-nothing above ground would survive anyway.  EF5 tornados have two very telling nicknames “Slab wipers” referring to the clean foundations slabs left where houses used to stand, and “Finger of God” as its basically nature’s magic eraser.

We learned how to be as safe as possible without an underground storm shelter.  Basically go to an interior room with no windows and hunker down and protect yourself from derbies as much as possible.  Which is where getting in the tub and covering it with a mattress comes from.

I did experience this as not a drill once in 4th grade.  They put us into shelter position because of a storm with rotation (I don’t remember anything ever touching down) and we sat there until the storm had moved through our area or weakened to not being a tornado threat.  I think we were there for like 20-30 minutes and that position is very not fun to hold after about 10 minutes.  I still think they put us in to shelter earlier because it was an upper level elementary school (grades 3-5) and didn’t want young potentially scared kids being a problem getting in position.

I don’t know why much of Texas doesn’t have more basement shelters.  I do know why the area I grew up in didn’t.  I grew up in the hill country and all the rocks and limestone layers make them very expensive to build.  It’s also why Austin, TX doesn’t have a subway system despite it being suggested no less than 3 times that I know of.

These reactions are always so entertaining, love watching your videos

Story time. One day in high school we had a routine tornado drill, and for the particular room I was in at the time our shelter location was the girl's bathroom at the end of the hall and to the left of the hallway intersection. I was having study hall with a teacher that just so happened to be my godmother (that was why I chose this room to have my study hall in the first place). Her and I and the couple other kids in the room went to this bathroom and were just going to hang out until the principal would tell us over the intercom to go back to class, but while we were hanging out I was BS'ing and checking out the stalls as it's not every day a boy can be in the girl's bathroom without getting in huge trouble. I opened the door of one of the stalls and got slapped in the face with a sickening stench, and what I saw scarred me for life. The toilet was COVERED in blood, like the water in the bowl was deep red with blood but it was also all over the seat and the tank and flusher, there was some on the floor, even some on the wall. Of course back then I knew what menstruation was, it's a normal part of the female experience...but that was A LOT of blood, a concerning amount of blood! The teacher was right behind me, telling me to not do what I was doing, but when she saw that scene she yanked me away, slammed the stall door shut and told everyone else to go back to our classroom as she tried hauling me to the office. Thought I was in trouble but instead she was trying to drag me to the nurses office, as being a close family friend she knew about me and my sister having a blood phobia that would make us faint. I convinced her that I was actually fine (at that time I was pretty much over the phobia and passing out anyway), so she ordered me to go to the classroom, stay there, and she was going to go report what she saw. Fast forward to a couple months ago, we were at a gathering and I brought up that moment to her, thinking it was not actually a big deal and someone had a bad period. She didn't want to go into details but said it ended up being a good thing I was horsing around and made that discovery because it helped connect the dots to some issue a girl was having.

Bulletproof backpacks exist, but they're expensive and not really useful most of the time.

Friday is when the best videos appear.

Also hello, Auri. 👋

9:33 split is not new at all 😭

Yes, bullet proof backpacks are a thing. It's not commonly used though. They're kinda nice because they protect your back normally and then you can just flip it around to protect your front when you know something's up. Some schools have tried to ban those types of backpacks, which kinda tells you where their priorities lie. Or rather where they don't lie.

I remember the time before the shooter drills, and then Columbine happened. The very first drills they forced us to do was the most idiotic idea ever. Their idea was to walk out of the school similar to a fire drill, but for these shooter drills they would lock the whole school in the outdoor tennis court. No cover. Everyone visible. Only a chain link fence to "protect" you. locking and barricading the room makes much more sense in modern drills in comparison.

2:15 It was later discovered that the water at my Elementary school caused some teachers to get cancer (I drank the water every day). I'm in college now and doing great, so I am good.

💜

Interesting, I did this drill before during my school. You didn't know that? witch Auri. I think that's a fact, because every school is so important to every school's usually they have tornadoes, lockdowns, every stuff like that.🧐🤔🤔

I never had to do these, but i realy dont get why for some of 'em, like why would you all huddle in a corner, when a active shooter, who has gone to school AND DONE THE SAME THING, AT THERE SCHOOL, so...     they not only know where you are, depending on the school, they might have gone to the same school, and now they know all the corners EVEN BETTER, the only way to make it somewhat work, it to get the teach, put them by the door with a gun, like a 9mm of some kind, and if the shooter comes in, you do the simpler thing of... click   no more shooter.

P.S. but just about the only time this was posseble was in the 1980s, i know this cuz my father told me and i quto "it was the time where it was normal for people to take shotguns to school", only in the 80s man.

7:26 Fearmongering. That's what's going on.

Yeah, the stats on "school shootings"(Much like the stats on "gun violence" in general) that tend to get circulated are EXTREMELY deceptive. The vast majority of cases that get reported end up being found to be false alarms. It's almost entirely self-inflicted harm that just happens to occur on or within a certain range of school property, usually when the school is closed and the "shooter" is the only one present. Actual cases of firearms being used with malicious intent towards another person are incredibly rare, especially when compared against population size(which is another thing they avoid doing to inflate the stats; comparing the total number of cases in the US against the total number of other countries whose total population is closer in number to a single one of the US's fifty states.)

But honesty doesn't sell overpriced protective gear that you'll never need or scare people into voting for law abiding citizens to lose their right to defend themselves against non-law-abiding citizens and the governments that keep letting them back out on the streets.

The bulletproof backpacks hysteria is ridiculous. People get on their soapboxes like "oh this is such a horrible thing that these are necessary" nobody actually uses them, they aren't actually effective at stopping bullets and nobody would use them as cover anyway. My guess is Kevlar backpacks were just made to show potential customers all the stuff that can be made with the material, and then people created a panic to push a political stance and also to get parents to buy their backpacks. School shootings are overreported anyway because it's the anti-gun groups that keep stats and misrepresent how many shootings there actually are.

As someone who went to public school in 'Murica, I can say with confidence, that all the drills did was waste time.
