My approach? Walk quietly and peacefully through the forest, then get a heart attack as a grouse flies up.

Hey first time viewer here. I hunted grouse back in ohio in my youth. My one tip is like your walking back the way you came on a road. So my tip is: watch your back trail. I’ve seen grouse walk out onto a road and watch hunters walking away.

Grouse have frightened more humans, in the woods then any other creature combined. When one is walking along and a grouse is flushed with out warning….very frightening as we know. Therefore it is our duty to hunt the most frightening animal in the woods. Enjoy!

In areas that are tough to hunt like the East. My Dad taught me to walk to an area that looks good and just sit silently for a while. The Grouse typically hunker down when they hear you but if you are not making noises they panic and move. Slow moving thru woods but it does work in areas that can get alot of traffic.

Opening day, my wife shot her first grouse with her little 28 gauge. She was so excited.

When I grouse hunted in Wisconsin I used the method of walking 10 paces and stopping for 10 seconds. I actually had a grouse fly up from the toe of my boot one time. It took off flying straight in front of me and I had to wait to shoot or I would've blown it to pieces. About 20 yards out it took a hard right and I thought it would be the easiest shot I'd ever make. I missed it completely. Grouse hunting is some of the most challenging shooting I ever did. Thanks for the tips. Great video.

A couple more points. Grouse eat gravel to help digest their food, if you come across a gravel pit walk around the perimeter and look into the brush. Looking into the bush as well as the sides of the road or pit because that's when you'll see a male sitting on a rock or log and sometimes females hiding under dead trees and such. If you scare one and it flies into a tree often times they'll just sit in that tree thinking they're safe.

bring a dog and the bird will think its a fox and fly into a tree for easy pickings. i find they often fly away from humans but will head to trees with dogs. also grouse eat a lot of rocks so the side of the road is good for that too. i usually see them eating rocks on the side of the road more than eating food.

Here in the Rockies (Wasatch range) I regularly find ruffed grouse (and dusky grouse) at elevations of 7000 or 8000 feet above sea level.

In Northern Ontario the best way to hunt grouse is drive on your ATV over the logging trails . The grouse come to eat gravel to digest their food. And yes the best times are early morning and late afternoon evening. And yes the next sunny morning after a rainy day ...BONANZA.

They also like to reside on the sides of dirt roads so they can eat small sand grains that are used in the gizzard that function to mechanically breakdown seeds and such.

2:11 - while you are focusing on a YouTube video, I hear a shot as someone gets a grouse. LOL too funny.

First year hunting grouse this season. Decided to add it to my big game hunt and harvested 2 of my first over the last 2 weeks. So delicious, can't believe I was missing out over the years.

Elderberries are a good winter grouse staple in my area…

A really good way I’ve found is to go elk hunting you’ll see tons of grouse.

Have been scared sh-tless more times then I can remember while mountain biking up a forest road to a trailhead in the clouds when some crazy who knows what in the bushes next to me erupts with thrashing and insanity before launching into the air headed directly towards my scull. Absolute shock and awe! Was able to take one out with a rock that landed close to me next to a rocky bank. Good eatin. But damn! Those lil Grouse got me more riled up than bears, mountain lions and bobcats I’ve seen out there. The only thing that’s scarier is people! Much respect!

Last time I watched you were up high, blues all over, now they're open, I've got seven so far this year, mix of blues and ruffs, lots of birds this year in N Central Wa

I often get more grouse on the way out than the way in. Perhaps my presence stirs them up a bit. I concentrate on spotting birds up to 30-40 yards off the road as I drive or walk. Go slow and let your eyes do the work. Don't try and spot the whole bird - look for a head bob, movement or part of the bird. I concur with all your tips including the tip on when the birds are active and hunting the day after storms. Most guys walk past birds and never know they were there....I can't stress enough about walking silently and scanning the brush carefully. I have driven 100 yards behind other people and shot several birds where they saw none. They must have been PO'd.
Great video!
