English chronicles repeatedly reported dragons. They were heard fighting in the sky, seen flying about unknown matters, considered ominous, and sometimes even said to arrive and wreak havoc. In the 13th century, the Benedictine monk Matthew of Paris, in his Chronicle Major, reports that dragons were seen in the sky before the Danish invasions, and also in 1233, the time he was writing his work. The most convincing account is from 1405, according to which a huge dragon appeared near Sudbury—probably in Suffolk. It killed sheep and shepherds, and attempts to shoot it with arrows proved ineffective: arrows clanged off its scaly sides. The dragon then fled to the marshes and was never seen again. The Canons of Laon, who visited England in 1113, are said to have seen a five-headed dragon that burned Christchurch in Hampshire with its sulfurous breath.

It was not until 1735 that Carl Linnaeus decided to remove dragons from the category of real animals, a category still discussed by such luminaries of Renaissance zoology as Konrad Gesner, Edward Topsell, Ulisse Aldrovandi, and Jan Jonston. In his groundbreaking work Systema naturae, Linnaeus classified dragons as Animalia paradoxa. In this program, I present the symbolism of dragons in medieval England and Wales. It was in the British Isles that Arthurian literature was born, which dominated the imagination of late medieval Europeans. Whether it also dominated the imagination of those from the land of Czersk is another matter.
