"Four things bring happiness in this world: a righteous spouse, a spacious home, a good neighbor, and a good riding beast (a reliable car). And the first of them is a righteous spouse." The Prophet ﷺ placed marriage at the top of the list because a happy home is the foundation of a happy life.
In this comprehensive lecture, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains the high station of marriage in Islam – why it is a strong covenant, how it completes half your religion, and why the Prophet ﷺ scolded those who wanted to remain single.
He covers the objectives of marriage, the five types of women to avoid, the importance of choosing a spouse for religion and character, and the ruling on polygyny.
In this video, you will learn:
The Importance of Marriage:
It is a strong covenant (mithaq ghaleez). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever can afford to marry, let him marry. It lowers the gaze and protects the private parts." He also said: "If you are given someone with religion and good character, marry them."
Four Things That Bring Happiness:
A righteous spouse,
a spacious home,
a good neighbor, and
a reliable riding beast (transport).
The first is the most important – a good spouse is the key to happiness.
Marriage Completes Half Your Religion:
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever Allah gives a spouse, he has been aided with half of his religion. Fear Allah in the remaining half."
The Objectives of Marriage:
1. Progeny and children – the Prophet ﷺ advised marrying a woman who is loving and fertile (Wadud and Walud).
2. Emotional fulfillment – tranquility (sakinah) is the immediate goal, followed by love (mawaddah) and mercy (rahmah).
3. Protection from sin – marriage guards the private parts.
The Ruling on Polygyny:
The scholars differ – some say it is permissible (mubah), others say it is recommended (mustahab). The strongest opinion is that one wife is better to avoid oppression according to the sheikh's inclination.
Five Types of Women to Avoid (and the five corresponding traits in men):
1. Ananah – constantly complaining, never satisfied.
2. Hananah – always comparing her husband to others or wishing she had married someone else.
3. Hadaqah – always looking at what others have and feeling her own life is lacking.
4. Barraqah – obsessed with her own appearance, neglecting her husband and children.
5. Shaddaqah – talks excessively, never giving the husband a word in.
Choosing a Spouse:
Religion and character come first, but you are also not discouraged to look at beauty, wealth, and lineage. The Prophet ﷺ told Jabir (RA) to marry a virgin so they could play and enjoy each other.
The Khitbah Process:
A man may see the woman he wishes to marry – either with her permission or without, depending on the situation and the ruling. A woman may also propose to a man, as seen in the story of Musa (AS) and the daughter of Shu'ayb.
The Prophet's ﷺ Marriage to Aisha (RA): This lecture serves as an introduction to understanding the Prophet's ﷺ marriage, setting the stage for debunking misconceptions in future lessons.
This lecture is essential for anyone seeking marriage, already married, or wanting to understand the Islamic perspective on this sacred institution.
