Matt Atkinson deserves to be on a US quarter. No, ne NEEDS to be. This man is probably the one of the best deserved people on the government's payroll. Actually, this man should be paid Congress pay along with it... and Vice Presidency.. then Presidency. Baby steps lol.

Lee had to be a megalomaniac. Most people think of him as some Bible quoting sweet man but when you consider that he was willing to allow thousands of men to be blown apart for a lost cause he had to be mentally deranged. I also read that he said he knew that they could not win but they men wanted to fight so he kept going. Most of those guys never owned a piece of land. Most of them struggled to make a living off the land. The wealthy land owners filled their heads with a bunch of lies to make them want to fight. War is almost always about more money and more power for the already wealthy.
The only reason that Lee won so many campaigns was because Lincoln had such horrible generals that would not fight. It pumped up those guys to thinking that they had a righteous cause and that they were invincible. Sad.
Pickett’s charge is enough to sicken a thinking person. All those men charging across an open field at cannons and rifles?? Insanity. No “holy man” could endure seeing that kind of carnage and continue to fight. No matter how righteous he thought the cause was (which he did not. It was his pride that motivated him) that is just too much of a price to pay. Then he high tails it back south from Gettysburg leaving the bodies of the dead sprawled on the ground. It was decades later before some of those men got a decent burial. Imagine how many poor families had no idea where or how their loved one died. The North had to bury them in mass graves.
I have read that Lee did not even believe in the “cause” but decided to take the position as commanding general when it was offered to him by Davis. His ego could not let him pass it up. Commanding men into the line of fire for a cause that you do not believe in? For a cause that he knew was lost from the start? That is an ego that will not quit. That is a mind able to block out his humanity.
Even at the surrender he would not admit that the North had won. He said that the North just had more soldiers. Well, the south would have had a lot more people if not for Lee continuing to fight even though he knew that they could not win. He would not even come out and surrender his sword. Too much pride.
Lee was a good tactician. If he had not taken the job as commander of the South’s army someone else would have done it, failed quickly, and the war would have ended several years and many thousands of lives sooner.

The ultimate question that t no one ever answers is why Lee chooses Heth's division. Lee was not himself during this battle, very out of touch. Heth's division was new to the army and completely shattered on July 1st. Brockenbrough didn't want to even command, he divided it in half for the charge.

Trent Lott should have placed a statue in Jones County Mississippi of Newton Knight a true Mississippian Patriot.

I have watched many of Matt Atkinson's talks and lectures on youtube and there are two consistancies: His talks are fact filled and entertaining, and the camera work is terrible. Does someone hand the camera to some 10 year old kid in the audience and expect to get good results? Scratch that...had they handed the camera to a 10 year old kid they probably would have gotten better results.
