Before Lionel Patea became one of Australia’s most notorious convicted killers, he had already built a reputation for violence within the Gold Coast underworld.

In Part 1 of this two-part story, we examine Patea’s early life, his involvement with the Bandidos bikie gang and the events that ultimately led to the murder of 37-year-old father-of-two Greg Dufty in July 2015.

What began as a dispute over a missing cannabis crop escalated into a brutal confrontation. Dufty was attacked, abducted and taken across the Queensland border to a remote property in northern New South Wales, where prosecutors said his body was burned. Despite an investigation spanning nine years, his remains have never been recovered.
This is the disturbing story of Lionel Patea, his path through the bikie underworld and the first of two murders he committed just months apart in 2015.

Part 2 will examine the murder of Tara Brown and the shocking events that brought Lionel Patea’s violence into full public view.
