You did not join the Roman Legion for glory. You joined because a drought destroyed your father’s wheat harvest, and an officer offered twenty-five silver denarii and a promise of land after twenty-five years of service. Fewer than half the men who took that coin ever lived long enough to claim that dirt.

In this video, we chronicle your 43-year journey through every single rank of the greatest military machine in ancient history—from a 17-year-old conscript digging perimeter ditches in the mud of the Rhine, to an aging Legatus commanding thousands of men while navigating the deadly paranoia of the Emperor in Rome.
