I would suggest comparing this to the current bullshit coming from the House of Rep under Jim Jordan etc, but a comparison would not even be possible. The well-spoken, honest eloquence of these gentleman typified a healthy time in this country and within its government.
The comment Dean made to Thompson about giving him the questions if he was still with the White House was a real dig. Thompson knew it and that's why he got all huffy.
Again, the truth has a very powerful way of presenting itself. The truth, along with the distraction of Maureen Dean’s presence, the Dean legal team, made John Dean’s performance flawless and successful.
Thanks for posting. I was 4 when this was going on and my parents made me watch the WHOLE THING😂. They didn't really, but I sure did watch a lot of it. I of course did not know what was going on, but it left quite a visual imprint on me. It's cool to watch it now from a much different viewpoint.
Great stuff!! Dean is only 35 years old in this vid - but he looks 55!! And his blushing bride ('Mo') would have been only about 28. And it has always been speculated that she was at least part of the reason for the final break-in. While Nixon was VP for eight years (1953-61), he chaired the '5412 Committee', which reviewed and approved all CIA covert operations (yes, the CIA had to ask for permission back then). Nixon was also the expected winner of the 1960 POTUS election over Kennedy. In preparation for his victory in 1960, Nixon (through the CIA) formed a squad of Cuban assassins that would be ready to take out Castro and his regime after Nixon's election - which never happened. Then the Bay of Pigs happened, and JFK was killed (with many of Nixon's same assassins in Dallas). RFK was next to be killed the summer before the 1968 POTUS election - giving Nixon the victory. Then, in 1969, Ted Kennedy was the hot prospect for 1972's election. But a thing called Chappaquiddick occurred in 1969 - which took away any chance for Ted to be the POTUS - all but handing the '72 election to Nixon. Then the Pentagon Papers 'leaked' from a CIA front company named the Rand Corp., and this made Nixon furious and paranoid. He then brought the 'Plumbers' in - from the original team Nixon himself had organized (and 'former' CIA and FBI agents). They were tapping the phones of the DNC head - Jim O'Brien. O'Brien knew about the 'Cubans' and the hit squad that Nixon had formed back in 1960 - and that they likely had something to do with JFK, RFK, Chappaquiddick, etc. Nixon had a huge lead in the polls and knew that only a bombshell like that would cost him the '72 re-election. Thus, he wanted to hear if the DNC had plans to reveal Nixon's past with 'the Cubans' (three of whom were arrested the night of the break-in). Many believe Dean had more to do with it than Nixon because of files the DNC had on his bride's ties to a call-girl operation...but that is whole other deal!! Crazy stuff.
Even though Dean's perceived by many as a valiant, noble whistleblower, I can't help but think that he has more than an air of treachery about his actions. He went along with everything and was even the progenitor of many aspects of the so-called 'intelligence' plan, as well as the subsequent coverup. When he sensed he was in the shit, he strived to be granted immunity - by grassing up his colleagues. In the world of organised crime, of course, he'd simply be labelled a 'rat.'
