Cambodia was a trap for Vietnam. The trap was mainly created by China because they did not want to see the united Vietnam rise after the Vietnam war. Vietnam was aware of it and that's why it took them 3 years to attack Cambodia.  The relationship between Cambodia and Vietnam was never great due past conflicts. The Cambodian regime at the time (Khmer Rouge) was arrogant and they believed they could beat Vietnam China's assistance. Cambodia was never a worthy component of Vietnam and who was dumb enough to start a war with Vietnam right after the Vietnam war where Vietnam had to fight a very brutal war against the US and still managed to get what they wanted. As long as Cambodia did not attack Vietnam, Vietnam would never invade Cambodia even if Khmer Rouge killed all their own people. That's because Vietnam need peace for building its own economy. Cambodia & China border wars and America sanction cost Vietnam 15-20 years of developmement. American at that time made a huge strategic mistake by siding with China and helped them develop their own economy and now it turns that America was helping to create their biggest enemy and now they have to deal with it.

What about the Laos-Vietnamese war? Entire royal family of Laos is murdered. Communism is always ruling through the barrel of a gun. Doesn't matter whose holding the gun.
