They witnessed the collapse of the system they served and then had to navigate a world in which the Third Reich ceased to exist.
Artur Axmann, Traudl Junge, Otto Günsche, Heinz Linge, and Rochus Misch were among Adolf Hitler's last companions, some of whom remained in the Berlin bunker until the very end. Five people from Hitler's inner circle survived the fall of the Third Reich. What happened to them next? Their fates are one of the most interesting epilogues to the bunker's history.

Some were taken prisoner by the Soviets, while others underwent the denazification process. Over time, some returned to work and led ordinary lives in West Germany and East Germany. People who had recently been at the very center of Nazi power were, after a few years, able to function alongside those for whom the war was already a closed chapter. How did they talk about Hitler and their own role years later? What could they actually have known about the regime's crimes, and what—as they themselves claimed—didn't? In the case of such witnesses, every account must be read with caution. Proximity to events provides access to details otherwise unavailable to others, but at the same time, personal involvement can lead to silences, excuses, and the portrayal of one's own past in a more favorable light.
The memories of those in the bunker are such an important and demanding source. Thanks to them, we can see the final days of the regime from the inside, witness the fall of the dictator.
In the new episode of the series "FACES OF THE REICH," I examine what happened to Axmann, Junge, Günsch, Ling, and Misch after 1945 and how they spoke about the world of which they were a part over the following decades. Which of these five stories most captivated you?
